At 14/1 Australia must be one of the biggest prices to win in the last 16 of the World Cup ever.
The Aussies were on of several nations to upset the odds by qualifying from the group stages, send much better-fancied countries home.
Argentina lie in wait for the Socceroos and the way this World Cup has gone so far you couldn’t rule anything out. The Argentinians, Portugal, France, Brazil, Spain and Germany have all suffered shock defeats although only the latter has paid the ultimate price and exited the tournament.
Will this be the World Cup where the traditional footballing underdogs from Asia, Australasia, Africa or even North America break the stranglehold of Europe and South America? We’re about to find out.
One man determined to ensure the status quo is Lionel Messi. Many a football fan would love to see him cap a wonderful career as a World Cup winner and as ever we can expect he’ll be instrumental in leading his country to the quarter-finals.
Australia will no doubt put up a spirited fight but they should be outgunned here and this looks like where theirr Qatar 2022 journey will end.
Argentina have enjoyed the lions share in their three group stages; 69% (vs Saudi Arabia), 59% (vs Mexico) and 73% (vs Poland). that also been refected in their corner counts which they’ve won 9-2, 4-2 and 9-1. In a match that looks likely to be dominated by the South Americans corners could pay dividends. They’re 1.950 on the Asian Handicap to beat the -4.5 corner handicap.
Penalties have dried up a little in Qatar but we should expect plenty of action in and around the Australian box this evening. That increases the chance of a spot kick at 6/4 and for Argentina to score one at 11/4.
Winners of this clash will play either the Netherlands or USA who meet at the Khalifa International Stadium, Al Rayyan this afternoon.
The Dutch are one of just two countries to come through the group stages unbeaten as they breezed through a relatively weak pool. But there’s some good quality in there and with a fair wind could go deep in to the competition.
USA were second best to England in Group B, finishing ahead of Iran and Wales. Going in to the tournament that would have been classed a success and anything else from here on in will be a bonus.
Louis van Gaal’s side look dangerously tempting at 10/11 but punters will be wary of backing one of the big-hitters on the outright markets at this tournament. If you fancy the Dutch to progress then backing them to score two or more at 6/5 might be a better approach.
