The bookies continue to laugh all the way to the bank at the World Cup after another day of surprise results
Defeat for Spain and elimation for Germany would’ve been disasterous results for punters yesterday in an already unpredictable tournament. Add in Morocco taking top spot in Group F and this was like Black Thursday, nevermind Black Friday.
Friday presents a few more conundrums for punters. Brazil and Portugal have already qualified but we’ve seen France and Spain beaten in recent days as well as Germany and Argentina earlier in the tournament so nothing can be taken for granted.
Brazil made heavy weather of their win over Switzerland but should be comfortable enough against a disjointed Cameroon squad.
Portugal could find things a bit more difficult if they’re not fully focused. South Korea came us short against Ghana but showed enough to suggest they’re competitive and in Cho Gue-sung look to have a goal threat.
The one to watch on Friday will be Ghana‘s clash with Uruguay where the Black Stars will be on a revenge mission. Luis Suarez was the villain of the piece when they last met at the World Cup when his last-ditch hand ball saved a certain goal, only for Ghana to miss the crucial penalty.

It could be a fiesty affair so FIFA have appointed German teacher Daniel Siebert to keep a lid on things. He’s generally a low-profile referee in the Bundesliga but has some big numbers in European and international matches. Chelsea fans may remember him from their match recent tie with AC Milan where he brandished one red and nine yellows.
Matches have been refereed pretty leniently and players have been fairly well-behaved so far but if any match has the potential to boil over it’s this one. Uruguay are traditionally no shrinking violets and happy to go toe-to-toe with anyone.
Over 4.5 at 5/6 feels a bit stingy so look for Uruguay to pick up two or more cards at 4/6. Add in at least one Ghana card to make it 4.5.
The winner of Switzerland v Serbia will progress to the last 16 (assuming Cameroon don’t beat Brazil). The Swiss just need a draw, but the Serbs’ mission is clearer – only a win will do.
Neither side have overly impressed to date. Serbia thought they had things wrapped up when they went 3-1 up over Cameroon but surrendered their two-goal lead. There was enough in that performance however to suggest they’re capable of overcoming the Swiss.
The bookies can barely separate them going 13/8 Serbia and 7/4 Switzerland so it’s a toss of coin as far as they’re concerned. Serbia’s greater goal threat could make the difference, they just look like they’ve better options going forward and more cutting edge.
