Enter stage: Lionel Messi.
This morning the little magician embarks on what could be his final opportunity to land the big one and emulate his hero Diego Maradona as Argentina start their World Cup against Saudi Arabia.
The two-time champions can ease their way in to the tournament with a comfortable win over the Arab nation. So far we’ve seen Qatar outplayed and Iran outclassed, emphasising the concensus that the AFC will be the weakest confederation represented in Qatar.
There’s little value to be had from an Argentina win at 1/7 nor the HT/FT result at 4/7 so instead have a look at them scoring from the spot. There’s been a penalty awarded in three of the four matches so far and in a game that should be dominated by the South Americans there’s more than a fair chance a spot-kick will feature.
Denmark are plenty of punters idea of a dark horse at the tournament. After beating the French twice in the Nations League they’ve been drawn alongside them in Group D. The two nations meet on Saturday night in what could be a group decider but they’re both favourites to start with a win today.
The Danes meet Tunisia at 1.00pm and there’s little to suggest that the North Africans can spring a surprise. They were soundly beaten 5-1 by Brazil in a recent friendly, although they did enjoy Kirin Cup success in the summer with wins over Chile and hosts Japan.
Denmark’s wins over World Champions France caught the eye but they still finished second in their Nations League group to Croatia. However, big things are expected of the Red and Whites and they should be trusted to get off to a winning start.
France’s form has been bit iffy this year and they’ve not had their problems to seek on the injury front. Few squads would be able to cope with the loss of the likes of Kante, Pogba and Benzema but such is the strength in depth available to Didier Deschamps that they should still go deep in to the competition.
Anything other than a win over Australia would be a major surprise so pair them up with Denmark for a Group D double.
