The big guns are in action in the Carabao Cup tonight but picking our way through the fixtures is going to be tough.
As ever, team news will be crucial. Man City v Chelsea is match of the night and we know that Pep Guardiola places a lot of importance in the trophy. He’s won the the EFL Cup four times so should field a relatively strong line-up, especially since it’s the Blues who are the visitors to the Etihad.
City are 1/2 to win inside the 90 minutes but all bets are off until we see team news. Erling Haaland still isn’t 100% apparently but he won’t be at the World Cup so Guardiola might give him a run-out. If he doesn’t start then the 12/5 on him to score last, like he did on Saturday could be worth a shot.
Newcastle United are flying at the moment and Eddie Howe would love nothing more than to underline their progress with some silverware. It’s been 67 years since the Magpies won a major domestic honour but could this be their year.
They host Crystal Palace tonight and if this was a league game the Toon would likely be slightly shorter than the 4/5 to win this evening, in which case they could be a bit of value.
It could be an interesting night at Ibrox. Giovanni van Bronckhorst has come under extreme pressure from fans following defeat at St Johnstone on Sunday. Anything less than a win for his side and it could be curtains for the Dutchman.
Hearts are the visitors and they’re chasing third spot in the table following defeats for Hibs and Aberdeen last night.
The bookies make Rangers 1/4 to claim the three points and to be fair their home form domestically has been decent enough, dropping just one point in seven games and only conceding three times. But should the Jambos strike first things could turn toxic.
You couldn’t be backing the Gers at those odds given some of the recent performances.
Celtic will of course be out to further capitalise on any slip-ups at Ibrox when they visit Motherwell. Dundee United gave the Hoops a bit of a scare on Saturday so expect them to come out all guns blazing once more.
Well haven’t been able to lay a glove on Celtic in quite a while and Ange Postecoglou’s men have scored 16 in the last four meetings between the sides. The Bhoys have been rampant this season and have already scored 46 goals in 13 games, averaging over 3.5 goals per game. They’re even money to hit three or more again tonight, something they’ve done eight times so far.
It’s also worth looking at penalties in the SPFL Premiership if you can get odds. Aberdeen’s visit to Livingston saw another three pens awarded and its now 13 awarded in 20 games since VAR was introduced (inc the one in the second half at the Toni Macaroni not included in the stats below).
I make that 12 penaties in 19 games since VAR was introduced (20 if we count Hibs/Ross County)
Think there was only 17 penalties awarded in the 63 games pre VAR this season.
