IT’S not often you get to mention Dumbarton and Real Madrid in the same sentence but both sides share the distinction of having a 100% record in their league campaigns since the start of the season.
The Sons put their winning start on the line at Stranraer tonight and this could be their trickiest test of the season so far.
Stranraer is always a tough place to visit and despite the fact they’re second bottom of the table no-one has left Stair Park with all three points yet this season. In fact they’ve only been denied wins by late, late goals at home to East Fife (94th min equalizer) and Bonnyrigg (97th min penalty equalizer), otherwise it would be three wins from three at home.
That’s perhaps why Dumbarton are as big as 23/20 to win but the hosts look a lively bet at 21/20 to win or 5/4 on the Draw No Bet market.
Stranraer games have been laden with goals (4-1, 3-1, 2-2, 3-2, 2-2, 2-2) and with the league leaders in town we could see some more tonight. Over 2.5 pays 3/4 but we can boost that to 20/21 by also taking at least one of those goals to be scored in the first half, something that’s happened in all of the hosts’ last six games.
In England it’s EFL Trophy night and that’s always a difficult one for punters. Five Premier League Academy teams (U21s) are in action tonight and the rules stipulate that they play all their group matches away from home. For a full lowdown on the competition and results from the previous round of fixtures check out the Wikipedia page here.
Historically the Academy teams have found the going tough in the competition. Only five of the fifteen U21 sides won their opening fixture in the competition so there could be some value backing against the youngsters.
Arsenal’s kids could be in for difficult night at in-form Ipswich (1/2) who top League One and are unbeaten after nine matches. As could Newcastle’s youths. They’ve not won a match in the competition since the 2018-19 season, their 0-0 draw with Doncaster (which they subsequently lost on pens) made it 11 without a win. Opponents Barnsley (4/5) sit sixth in League One and are in need of a win in Group after losing 3-0 to Lincoln City in their opening match.
98 goals were scored in the 31 games in the first round of matches giving us an average of 3.16 per game. At that rate we shouldn’t be too far off the 38+ goals set for a selected 12 matches in Skybet’s special at 1/1 money (goto Football > Specials > Competition Specials).
