The Europa Conference League has been a welcome addition to the European football calendar and in it’s inaugural season it served up a final between two big hitters in the shape of Roma and Feyenoord.
It’s Villarreal who head the betting this season at 11/2 with West Ham second favourites at 13/2.
Davie Moyes may have ambitions of lifting the Europa Conference League trophy but he’s not in the business of selling the group stages to his fans; “The group stage is never the bit that makes you go ‘great, I’m looking forward to the games” bemoaned Moyes. Perhaps that provides an insight in to his approach tonight. Yes, he’ll want to win but with the Hammers languishing in 18th place in the Premier League his priorities currently lie elsewhere.
It’s should be enought to put you off the skinny odds of 1/4. FCSB ran Cluj close to the Romanian title last season but like the Hammers have made a slow start this term, taking just seven points from a possible 21. Noticeably though they’ve scored in all but two of their 13 matches in all competitions. That makes the 11/10 on BTTS look a good option.
It’s not been a vintage week for Scottish clubs in Europe so far; Celtic earned some plaudits for their attacking approach despite a 3-0 defeat to European champions Real Madrid, but there were few positives for Rangers in their 4-0 defeat to Ajax. Hearts will be aiming to restore some Scottish pride in Edinburgh tonight.
Tynecastle will be packed for the visit of Basaksehir but it’ll be a big ask for the Jambos to get off to a winning start against Mesut Ozil and co. The Turks successfully negotiated three rounds to get to the group stages and have made a good start domestically, winning three and drawing one without conceding in their four games to date.
Hearts have suffered a bit of a dip in form and have won just one of their last five. 11/10 on the away win makes plenty of appeal, as does the 11/10 on two or more goals for the visitors.
It was FC Zurich that denied Hearts a place in the Europa League and tonight they host in-form Arsenal in Group A. It should be a comfortable night for the Gunners against a side that have yet to win in seven attempts in the league this season so far.
Mikel Arteta’s side are 2/7 to win, so for a bit more value back them to be leading at half-time and full-time at 10/11 (SBK).
With Thomas Tuchel gone there’s another managerial vacancy in the Premier League and the search for the next Chelsea manager is on. Mauricio Pochettino has been installed as the bookies’ favourite at 11/8 with Brighton boss Graham Potter next on the list at 11/4. other early contenders include Brendan Rodgers at 5/1, Zinedine Zidane at 11/1 and John Terry at 33/1.
