It’s that time of the year folks when Tennis takes centre stage or should I say centre court as we look forward to a fortnight of Wimbledon with strawberries and cream at SW19.
The tournament runs from Monday 27th June until the the Mens final on 10th July with the ladies final the day before on Saturday 9th July.
Wimbledon has already caught the headlines for other reasons in the build up to this year’s tournament.
Who’s Playing at Wimbledon and Who’s Not?
The decision to ban Russian and Belarusian players has had a massive impact on this year’s event and the ATP and WTA have now stripped Wimbledon of any ranking points which basically means it will be an exhibition event. Good luck telling any of the players and supporters that at the All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club.
Notable absentee’s due to the restrictions will be the current Men’s World No1 , Daniil Medvedev, along with fellow Russians Andrey Rublev, Karen Khachanow,and Aslan Karatsev. On the womens’ front the missing females include Aryna Sabalenko, Victoria Azarenka, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Daria Kasatkina and Liudmila Samsonova.
Other players worth mentioning who are missing through injury include Roger Federer, Venus Williams and Naomi Osaka while we are still waiting on Andy Murray and Emma Raducanu, the latest British sensation who recently won the US Open, to declare themselves fit.
How to watch Wimbledon 2022
The BBC will once again be covering this year’s Wimbledon each day with former British No.1 Sue Barker at the helm, it will be Sue’s last year presenting Wimbledon after almost 30 years. Live coverage will begin on BBC1, BBC2 and BBC i player from 11am each morning from Monday 27th July.
Due to the significant prize money on offer this year, £40,350,000 to be exact, yip that’s millions, just making it to the first round will earn players £50,000 with the winners collecting not just the prestigious Wimbledon trophy but also a cheque for half a million punds.
When you consider that in 1968, when the first cheques were dished out, the mens’ winner received £2,000 and for the women it was £750, ou can see the difference a few years make.
Who will win Wimbledon 2022?
Novak Djokovic, the current 4/5 favourite with Bet365 for the mens’ draw will be defending his crown after defeating Matteo Berrettini in 2021. Djokovic enjoys playing on grass and will be the one they all have to beat yet again.
The 35 year old from Belgrade, Serbia will be all fired up after missing the Australian Open due to not being vaccinated and also being put out the French Open in May at the quarter-final stages by his rival Rafael Nadal.
The womens’ draw will not see the return of last year’s champion Ashleigh Barry who has since retired. Iga Swiatek 6/4 Bet365 and current world number one, is the clear favourite to win the ladies’ draw, the young 21 year old Polish sensation will be looking to win her first Wimbledon and is the one they all have to beat on current form after winning the French Open earlier this month.
