Epsom Derby Betting Preview (Saturday 4th June)
We are now well into the flat season and the most famous races of them all – the Derby and Oaks – are not too far away, with today’s workout morning at Epsom Downs providing a timely reminder of just how close the big races are.
We have a strong – and very worthy – favourite for the Derby in Desert Crown, who will take the beating on the basis of his deeply impressive Dante win from a strong yardstick in Royal Patronage. If he travels through the race then it’s hard to imagine many would finish better but the market very much knows that and there could be value in what looks to be reasonably open renewal.
Sir Michael Stoute believes favourite Desert Crown does not have to improve much from his striking display in the Dante to give him a sixth win in the Derby

We haven’t yet seen confirmation that Eydon (see below) will run, but Roger Varian’s charge arguably brings the strongest form into the race courtesy of his 2,000 Guineas fourth. Ahead of him that day were Coroebus, subsequent Irish Guineas winner Native Trail, and Vertem Futurity Trophy winner Luxembourg, who was a strong favourite for this until unfortunately being injured.
Eydon was around 20/1 when Luxembourg was set to participate, and is surely value at the same price now – if he goes. It’s not confirmed that he’ll go to Epsom – but connections appeared to be pleased with how he went over the track in his gallops and if he goes, it would be a surprise if you could get such a generous price on the day.
Of the rest, Piz Badile could be the value after his game win in the Ballysax Stakes.

Epsom Oaks Betting Preview (Friday 3rd June)
The Oaks appears to be at the mercy of Emily Upjohn, such an impressive winner of the Musidora at York. If she can get settled – something that wasn’t an issue for her at Sandown – then she’ll take a huge amount of beating on the evidence of her Knavesmire win.
However, she’s already an even money shot and with three places, it’s tempting to go for an each/way shot against her. Concert Hall looked every inch an Oaks type when grinding out a short head victory in the Salsabil Stakes, and she ran a fine race when third to Homeless Songs (stablemate and contender Tuesday second) in the Irish 1,000 Guineas.
The fourth foal of Was – the 2012 winner of this race – she could relish the step up to 1m 4f the same way her mother did and if she improves then she’d have a major each/way shout on her Guineas form.
Tuesday’s Guinea’s runs were thoroughly creditable and she should be up to going close, whilst With The Moonlight was most impressive at Newmarket’s Guineas meeting. Nashwa, an impressive Haydock winner who followed up in a trial stakes at Newbury, is another major player.
