You’d have got fairly large odds at the beginning of the season if you’d predicted an Eintracht Frankfurt v Rangers Europa League final but here we are and what an opportunity for both clubs to add a major European trophy to their honours list.
It looks like a game that could go either way but the bookies are favouring the Bundesliga side in the betting, making them 4/6 favourites in Seville, with Giovanni Van Bronckhorst’s men 6/5 to lift the trophy. On the outright market (90 minutes) the Germans are 13/10 whilst the Scots are 21/10 but this one looks too close to call with the draw at 12/5 a lively shout.
The danger for Rangers could be complacency, they’ve already beaten Borussia Dortmund (2nd in Bundesliga) and RB Leipzig (4th) to reach the final so are surely capable of taking care of an Eintracht side that finished 11th and failed to win any of their last eight Bundesliga matches?
But the same could also be said of a Frankfurt side who have disposed of teams from Europe’s top leagues such as Real Betis, West Ham and Barcelona and now face a Gers side who have already lost five times in the competition and won just one of seven away from Ibrox (W1 D2 L4) as well as suffering defeat at Malmo way back in August when Champions League qualification was at stake.
The unbeaten Germans topped a weak group that featured Olympiacos, Fenerbahçe and Antwerp whilst Rangers were the only team to qualify for the knock-out phase with 8 points, finishing second behind Lyon.
Early goals at Ibrox were a key feature of Rangers’ run to the final but they adopted a more defensive approach when going down 1-0 to a late goal at RB Leipzig in the semi-final. Van Bronckhorst’s attacking options are limited, although Kemar Roofe should return, so he may be a bit more pragmatic to start with. That could make for a cagey opening half hour where it’s 5/6 for no goal to be scored.
The goals should come eventually though. All but two of Eintracht Frakfurt’s 12 games in the competition so far have seen Both Teams Score, whilst Rangers’ eight knock-out matches (inc extra-time) have featured 26 goals, averaging 3.25 per game.
BTTS tonight pays 3/4, Over 2.5 Goals is even money. The former looks the better option despite the shorter price.
James Tavernier has scored more than anyone else in this year’s tournament with his uncanny knack of popping up inside the box from his right wingback position. He’s also been deadly from the penalty spot so it’s a surprise to see 11 players ahead of him in the betting at Bet365. The Englishman has scored four times from the spot and is 10/1 to open the scoring this evening or 7/2 to score anytime.
