If last night’s Champions League semi-final is anything to go by we should be in for another thriller tonight at Anfield.
Only an idiot would’ve tipped a 0-0 Bonkers Bet in game that finished 4-3 (🙋♂️), but this particular idiot will go again tonight. The only way is up right?
And so to Liverpool v Villarreal. The Spaniards came through the group stages in second place behind Manchester United in a pretty uninspiring group which also included Atalanta and Young Boys. But their 3-0 away against Juventus in the last 16 made people sit up and take notice.
It was a game in which they frustrated the Italians before delivering the sucker punches late in the game inspired by the introduction of Gerard Moreno at 0-0 with 15 minutes to go.
Unai Emery’s side delivered another masterclass in Munich in the quarter-finals. When Robert Lewandowski drew Bayern level in the tie after 52 minutes the script looked like it was going to follow a familiar plot line but again El Submarino Amarillo kept their opponents at bay before delivering the knock-out blow on the 88th minute.
Tonight they face one of the best attacks in Europe and unlike in previous rounds they don’t have a first leg result to cling on to. That could give the Reds the chance to steal a march in the tie and establish a comfortable lead ahead of the second leg next week.
The truth is you’d want to be backing Liverpool tonight, at any price, no matter which team in Europe they were playing. The Reds have been in phenomenal form and are the cusp of greatness if they can tie up the league title, FA Cup and this Champions League in the next month or so.
Villarreal deserve respect but don’t lose sight of the fact that they’re 7th in La Liga, they’ve failed to beat any of the top four sides in the Spanish top flight and they lost both matches against Manchester United in the group stages. Sure they’ve picked off Juve and Bayern but their run can’t go on forever can it?
Everton frustrated Liverpool for longer than expected in Saturday but in trying to find some value in this one it could be worth going back in on Liverpool/Liverpool on the half-time/full-time market. It’s a bet that’s landed in five of their last matches and looks a fair price at 10/11.
Mo Salah to score anytime at 4/5 also catches the eye, while Ibrahima Kounate, who opened the scoring in both matches against Benfica in the previous round is 20/1 to do so again.
