It’s unusual to see Real Madrid as 33/1 shots to lift the Champions League trophy at this stage of the competition but that’s where the 13-time champions of Europe find themselves following a 1-0 first leg defeat to PSG.
It’s far from being a vintage Madrid side these days but they kept themselves in the tie at Le Parc des Princes, however the bookies rate them 9/4 outsiders to qualify.
It took a late Mbappe goal to separate the sides in Paris but it was a game PSG totally dominated with 21 shots at goal to the Spaniards’ three. Madrid defended well but they’ll need to be more adventurous if they plan on progressing and that might prove dangerous. PSG are 13/8 to win on the night and even money to score two or more. Since PSG don’t need to win the latter looks the better bet.
The night’s other Champions League game looks a dead rubber. Manchester City thrashed Sporting 5-0 in Portugal to make qualification a formality tonight and cement their status as 9/4 favourites to lift Europe’s premier trophy for the first time.
Incredibly Pep Guardiola says he’s short of players for the match with only 14 apparently available. It’s unlikely City will have too many empty seats on their bench but it could a much-changed starting XI that begins the match. That could give punters some opportunity to exploit player markets so keep an eye on the City line-up for some bigger goalscorer prices than normal.
In the Europa League Porto can claim a first leg lead at home to Lyon. The Portuguese side were squeezed out of the Champions League by Atletico in a group that also included Liverpool and AC Milan. A more favourable draw there could’ve seen them competing in the last 16 of that competition instead of this.
Visitors Lyon sit 6th in Ligue 1 but breezed through their Europa League group taking 16 points from a possible 18 including three away wins. But they’ve won just four of 13 on the road in France and only Liverpool and Atleti have won at Porto’s Estádio do Dragão this season so even money looks a fair price for the home win.
