Two of the tournament favourites, Man City and PSG, put a foot in the quarter-finals of the Champions League with wins on Tuesday night. Another couple of fancied teams are in action tonight in Italy and Austria.
Inter are involved in a blockbuster of a title race in Serie A where three teams (themselves, AC Milan and Napoli) are separated by just two points. As expected they qualified for the last-16 from a group that included Sheriff Tiraspol and Shakthar Donetsk but suffered two defeats at the hands of Real Madrid, highlighting a potential gap in quality between themselves and the European elite.
There’s no doubt that Liverpool fall in to that category. The Reds breezed through Group B, arguably the toughest looking on paper, without dropping a single point. Notably, Jurgen Klopp’s side won both matches against current Serie A leaders AC Milan including a 2-1 win at the San Siro.
Liverpool to win at 11/10 looks a fair price but it’s always a bit less tempting to get involved in the outright markets in the first leg of ties between closely matched teams. Instead, two Liverpool goals could be a better option at 5/6. The Reds have scored two or more in 19 of 24 Premier League games and in all six Champions League matches this season. With Mane and Salah restored to the side, as well as the attacking threat from 17-goal Diogo Jota, they should get on the scoresheet at least once, if not twice.
Tonight’s other Champions League match sees 2020 winners Bayern Munich make the 89mile trip across the border to face the Austrian champions FC Salzburg.
Bayern continue to rule the roost in Germany but conceded four first-half goals for the first time in the Bundesliga for 45 years at the weekend when mid-table Vfl Bochum stunned the champions in a 4-2 win. It was their second defeat in five since the turn of the year and their fourth of the league campaign, already equalling last season’s tally.
Bayern’s goalscoring exploits have been phenomenal this season however, they’ve hit three or more in 14 of 22 (63%) of their Bundesliga matches and did the same in five of their six Champions League group stage matches, qualifying as the highest scoring team with 22 goals. Across the two competitions their matches average 4.3 goals per game.
Salzburg returned to action at the weekend following a winter break and got right back in to the groove with a 2-1 win at Rapid to assert their dominance in the Austrian Bundesliga and maintain their 14 point lead at the top of the table. They qualified in second place from a low-key qualifying group which included Lille (10th in Ligue 1), Sevilla (2nd in La Liga) and Wolfsburg (12th in Bundesliga), winning a crucial matchday six showdown against the Spaniards at the Red Bull Arena to progress.
But they look like they could be lambs to the slaughter over the two legs against Bayern. The sides last met in the group stages in 2020 when Bayern won 6-2 in Austria followed by a 3-1 win at the Allianz Arena. It could be a similar story once more and Salzburg could feel the extent of Julian Nagelsmann’s side wrath following that embarrassing defeat at the weekend.
Bayern are usually too good for teams outside the top five leagues, Porto being the last to defeat them in 2014, so a win looks assured, it’s just a matter of how many they’ll score. Going by their record so far this season three goals shouldn’t be out of the question for Lewandowski and co. A Bayern win and Over 2.5 Bayern Goals pays 21/20 at Bet365.
