Bayern Munich will be looking to bounce back from a shock defeat in the Bundesliga at the weekend when they resume their Champions League campaign away at RB Salzburg on Wednesday night.
I’ve already penned a separate match preview on this round of 16 showdown but I’m also going to factor this fixture into the first half of a double.
Fresh off the back of a 4-2 defeat at newly-promoted Bochum on Saturday, Matthias Jaissle’s hosts could feel the wrath of a wounded Bayern Munich beast this midweek.
History shows that this is the type of assignment that Germany’s traditional flat-track bullies are particularly efficient in dealing with, as was the case when Julian Nagelsmann’s side strolled to victory in each of six of their Group E matches.
Sure, Salzburg are unbeaten at home and have punched above their weight in this year’s competition, but facing opponents the size of Bayern, who boast a fine crop of world class talent, could prove one step too far.
Therefore, I suspect the Red Bulls will become the latest victims of Bayern’s big red machine and backing the German giants to triumph in Austria will form the first part of my 17/20 (Bet 365) double.
Inter Milan vs Liverpool (Wednesday, 20:00)
A mouthwatering showdown in the Champions League takes place on Wednesday night as Inter Milan welcome Liverpool to the San Siro in the round of 16.
The Nerazzurri finished second in Group D to secure their spot in the first knockout round, while six-time winners Liverpool posted six pool wins from six to progress to the stage of this competition.
Jurgen Klopp’s has since strengthened his squad, not to mention the Reds have lost just one of their subsequent 13 fixtures, winning each of their last six matches across all competitions.
Inter, meanwhile, have seen the wheels somewhat fallen off title defence in recent weeks, with Simone Inzaghi’s side winning just one of their last four Serie A assignments.
What’s more, the hosts have tended to fall short against the Italian top flight’s elite this term, triumphing in just one of their seven tussles with each of the other four teams currently housed in the top five.
With that in mind, coupled with the fact that Liverpool have already tasted victory at this venue this season, I’m more than happy to complete the 17/20 (Bet 365) double by backing the Merseysiders to avoid defeat in Milan.
