The drama of the FA Cup is alive and well in 2022. Middlesbrough rocked up to Old Trafford last night and dumped Manchester United out of the competition in a dramatic penalty shoot-out to kick-off the weekend in some style.
Will it signal a weekend of shocks in the competition?
Plymouth (20/1), Kidderminster (16/1) and Hartlepool (22/1) are the biggest price minnows of the day against Chelsea, West Ham and Crystal Palace respectively but it would be a major surprise if any of them laid a glove on their Premier League opposition.
Spare a thought for Fulham too, who are flying at the top of the Championship but have drawn the toughest trip in English football at the moment, away to Manchester City. The bookies rate them 14/1 shots to win so you’d think there’d be some value in them at least finding the net but Bet365 have a Fulham goal at just 8/11 – a reflection of their remarkable 74 goals scored in the Championship so far this season.
Four-time FA Cup winner Frank Lampard takes charge of Everton for the first time in what could be a tricky tie at home to Brentford. The Chelsea legend will hope to breathe life in to the Toffees’ season with an FA Cup run and will be desperate to get off to a winning start. Renewed optimism plus the addition of the likes of Dele Alli and Donny van de Beek could carry Everton to victory at 21/20.
At a similar price QPR (21/20 Bet365) can book a rare place in the 5th round with a win at Peterborough. Rangers are going great guns in the Championship while Posh are languishing near the foot of the table and would take league survival over cup success no doubt.
It’s a similar story for Huddersfield (7/10) who host bottom-of-the-table Barnsley. The Terriers have been in good form and should progress at the expense of the Tykes who can’t buy a win at the moment.
In the Scottish Premiership Celtic and Rangers don’t play until tomorrow. There are a couple of bets that catch the eye though.
Only the two Glasgow giants have scored more goals than Ross County this season and the Staggies have scored nine in their last two visits to Dens Park. They’re 2/1 to win and an attractive 13/8 to score two or more against a Dundee defence which is the second worst in the league, ironically only County have conceded more.
St Mirren could be overpriced at Easter Road where Shaun Maloney is struggling to make his mark at the moment. After a good start things have stalled for the former Belgian national team assistant coach. The Buddies are tough team team to beat but too many draws (11) sees them still looking over their shoulders. Hibs look too short at 17/20 so are best avoided.
Things could be looking up for St Johnstone at last. A late winner at Livingston proved there’s still life in Callum Davidson’s side and he’s added a raft of new faces to freshen up his squad. Now they need to build on that with a win at home to Dundee Utd who still harbour top six ambitions despite a recent run of six consecutive defeats. It’s another close one to call but if Saints have turned the corner the 7/5 could be worth taking on.
In the Championship Dunfermline look like another side who have finally found their mojo. John Hughes’ side have won seven of the last nine points available to lift themselves up to 7th in the table and they too had a busy January transfer window. The 9/5 available in a Pars win at Ayr United looks generous.
