Despite 22 Premier League games being postponed so far, a near two-week ‘rest window’ is under way with no plans to use the break to catch-up on re-arranged fixtures.
So it’s all about the race to join the Premier League, the Scottish Premiership, European Leagues and the final stages of the African Cup of Nations in the next couple of weeks.
There’s a full card of Premiership matches in Scotland this midweek kicking-off with Aberdeen’s visit to St Mirren tonight. Both sides safely navigated their way through the 4th Round of the Scottish Cup and are generally in good form.
The Buddies are unbeaten in five, their only loss being a 2-0 defeat at Ibrox, and have been picking up points here and there to move eight points clear of bottom side St Johnstone. They’re only six points off the top six and a win tonight would place them just three points behind sixth-placed Aberdeen.
Stephen Glass finally looks like he’s got Aberdeen heading in the right direction. 11 points won in their last six league games is their best haul of the season so far but they’ve only won twice away from home so they need to prove that this isn’t a false dawn by winning in Paisley tonight.
The bookies rate them 5/4 faves to get all three points with Jim Goodwin’s side at 12/5.
Lewis Ferguson has scored in Aberdeen last three matches and being on penalty duties he could be a good bet to break the deadlock at 5/1. Finding a St Mirren scorer is a bit tougher since seven different players have scored their last seven goals.
In the Championship QPR v Swansea City is tonight’s live match on Sky Sports but Nottingham Forest look the safest bet of the night. The Tricky Trees lost a couple of games over Christmas, their only two losses in 13 league games, but have recovered with three wins on the bounce including that fantastic victory over Arsenal in the FA Cup.
Barnsley are still without a league win since Poya Asbaghi replaced Markus Schopp back in November. Just three points from seven games means they’re rooted to the bottom of the table and a massive 14 points from safety.
A Forest win pays 7/10. 10 of Forest’s 11 wins this season have seen them score two or more so adding Over 1.5 Forest goals takes the price up to 6/5.
