Wednesday’s Football Bet of the Day see’s me focus on Wednesday’s Champions League matches. I’ve picked two sides at home who I’m keen to get on side to give us a nice odds against double.
Atalanta vs Villarreal
🇪🇺 Champions League
⏰ Wednesday 8th December, 20:00
Villarreal travel to Bergamo to take on Atalanta at the Gewiss Stadium. Villarreal are the ones in the box seat, knowing if they avoid defeat they’ll join Manchester United in the last 16. Atalanta, on the other hand, know they must win to make their way through to the knockout stages.
Atalanta come into this in superb form, with Gian Piero Gasperini’s men unbeaten in their last 10 matches in all competitions. They’ve won each of their last five in Serie A, including a 2-3 win in Naples over then league leaders Napoli. Atalanta have scored 35 goals in their 16 Serie A matches, with only champions Inter scoring more. Atalanta have also scored 10 goals in Group F, finding the net in all five matches, scoring on multiple occasions in four of them.
Villarreal have had a disappointing season in La Liga this season, languishing in 13th and suffered yet another defeat at the weekend as they lost 1-0 to Sevilla. That’s now just one win in their last eight La Liga matches for the Yellow Submarine, losing five of them. Villarreal’s two wins in Group F have came against bottom side Young Boys, with Unai Emery’s side taking just one point from their other three group games. Villarreal have kept just one clean sheet in the group, conceding on multiple occasions in three of them.
Benfica vs Dynamo Kiev
🇪🇺 Champions League
⏰ Wednesday 8th December, 20:00
Benfica host Ukrainian champions Dynamo Kiev at the Estádio Da Luz in Lisbon. The Portuguese giants are two points behind Barcelona in 2nd and need a win on Wednesday evening and hope the Catalan side fail to win in Munich. The visitors are already eliminated from Europe and will finish bottom.
Benfica come into this after suffering a 1-3 at home to bitter city rivals and current champions Sporting Lisbon. That was only Benfica’s second loss in Liga NOS this season, with them taking 31 points from their opening 13 league matches. Benfica have only lost twice in Group E, albeit heavily to group leaders Bayern Munich, but did claim an impressive point in Catalonia against Barcelona last time out. Overall, Jorge Jesus has saw his side win eight of their 11 home matches in all competitions so far this season.
Dynamo Kiev come into this having won each of their last three in the Ukrainian Premier League but it’s in Europe where they struggle. After collecting a point in their opening group match against Benfica in Kiev, the Ukrainians have gone on to lose each of their next four in the group, conceding nine goals. A major problem for Kiev has been how toothless they’ve been in attack. Mircea Lucescu’s side scored their first goal in Group E in defeat to Bayern Munich last time out, with only Malmö having an equally poor goal scoring record than them across all eight groups.
Bet of the Day
Atalanta come into this match knowing they must defeat Villarreal if they plan on making it through to the knockout stages. Gian Piero Gasperini’s side will come into this full of confidence, winning each of their last five in Serie A, including wins over both Juventus and Napoli. They’ve already scored 45 goals in their 21 matches in league and Europe this season and I’m expecting them too be too strong for a Villarreal side who’ve been poor all season long. Atalanta don’t keep too many clean sheets though, so therefore may need to score at least twice, so with that in mind, I’m happy to back Atalanta to score over 1.5 goals. Benfica know if they are to make it to the last 16, they must defeat Dynamo Kiev and hope Barca fail to win in Munich. Benfica should at least do their bit and defeat a Kiev side who’ve collected just one point in Group E, scoring just one goal. Benfica are generally strong at the Estádio Da Luz and I’m backing them to get their victory over the Ukrainian champions.
- Atalanta to Score 2+
- Benfica to Win
- Double Pays 27/25 (William Hill)
