Tonight’s the night for Steve Clarke’s Scotland. A win in Moldova and a World Cup play-off is guaranteed. Simple right?
Yes, according to the bookies who rate the Scots as 1/5 chances to win in Chișinău. But that price would be considered short for even the most ardent member of the Tartan Army. The Moldovans prop up Group F, their only point coming at home to the Faroes, and Scotland huffed and puffed to a 1-0 win when the sides met at Hampden in September.
Goalscorer that night was Lyndon Dykes, but crucially the QPR striker is suspended alongside Ryan Christie, diminishing Scotland’s goalscoring options. Moldova shipped four to both Denmark and Israel at home, as well as eight in Copenhagen but with so much at stake tonight things could be a bit tighter.
Under 2.5 Goals is even money and it would be un-Steve-Clarke-like for Scotland to go chasing after goals if they’re the necessary goal or two ahead going in to the final stages of the match.
England usually have top spot sewn up by this stage of qualification but there’s still a little bit of work to be done by Gareth Southgate’s men and they should get over the line at Wembley tonight. Albania are a much-improved side and it’s credit to them that they can still mathematically finish the group in top spot but more realistic is a second place finish however they’d really need to win tonight.
But the bookies make them 25/1 no-hopers and anything other than a win for the Three Lions would send shockwaves round world football. An England win to nil is just 4/9 but a BetBuilder of England to score more than one goal and Albania not to score is more backable at 4/5 with Bet365.
Germany (9-0), Russia (6-0) and Croatia (7-1) all rattled in goals last night and Poland and Hungary should rack up a few against Andorra and San Marino respectively. Backing the Poles to score Over 2.5 coupled with the Hungarians to score Over 3.5 pays over 11/10 at Bet365.
