Newcastle United joined football’s nouveau riche last week but it could take a while before they’re dining at soccer’s top table.
With seemingly unlimited funds now at their disposal following a controversial takeover, the Toon could be calling the tune among the games’ elite sooner rather later but for now their priority is to get themselves out of the bottom three of the Premier League.
And that task begins with a home match against Spurs on Sunday. Steve Bruce’s side have now gone eight without a win and all but two of those winless matches have been against sides outwith the top half of the table.
Visitors Spurs returned to winning ways with a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa last time out which stopped the rot following three painful defeats to Palace, Chelsea and Arsenal but they’re still waiting on Harry Kane to hit top form this season. The England marksmam has gone six Premier League games with out a goal but he’s found the net five times at St James’ Park and is 11/10 to score anytime today.
Everton boss Rafa Benetiz is 33/1 to make a dramatic return to the Newcastle hotseat but his immediate target is to take his current side in to the top four. The Toffees have enjoyed an excellent start to the season but it’ fair to say the fixture list has been relatively kind to them.
West Ham will offer a stern test as David Moyes returns to his old stomping ground. The Hammers have won two of their last four visits to Goodison and are 15/8 to take all three points back to London.
Swansea might fancy their chances in the Welsh Derby at noon. Rivals Cardiff City have lost five on the bounce and seven of their last eight. You’d expect bigger odds than 21/10 on the Bluebirds claiming the bragging rights but the Swans aren’t in much better shape. They too have won just one in eight but they have at least picked up some draws during that run, three of which finished goalless.
Two of the last three meetings have seen six cards issued so given the lack of form and goals from either side the 6/5 on Over 4.5 cards could be as good an option as any.
