The home of golf never disappoints: St Andrews simply provides magic. Danny Willets’ return to the winners circle at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship isn’t a surprise given his pedigree, great to see his return to form. I believe we will see Danny’s name at the top end of many leader-boards in the coming months, especially as he’s recently (re)joined forces with Jonathan Smart who was his caddy for the wins at The Masters, the Nedbank and the Dubai Dessert Classic to name but a few.
It was also good to see the top 10 of the Dunhill full of our Ryder cup stars, Tyrell Hatton’s form continues at that event having not finished outside the top 6 in the last 5 years. Lowry and Fleetwood also finished inside the top 10 which means it’s great to see there have been no Ryder Cup hangovers!
The tour schedule now moves from the blustery shores of Scotland to slightly warmer climates of Spain. The Open de España is next up, an event that typically provides good scoring and home grown winners.
All Eyes on Rahm for Spanish Return
All eyes will be on Jon Rahm, given his form at this event in recent years, plus the Ryder cup and being world number 1, it’s hard to look past him not being involved at the business end of the tournament come Sunday afternoon. It’s a brave man to bet against him especially on Spanish soil. That being said, I think we will see the Spanish flag flying high on the leaderboard this week, if not Rahm then other notables such as Adrian Otaegui who’s a proven winner in tour or Nacho Elvira who himself has very recently joined the winners circle in Wales.
If the each way market and slightly longer odds is more your thing. I think form is the order of the day! So given his performances this year dominating the Challenge Tour, Im eager to see how Santiago Tarrio plays this week. Given he’s won twice and finished a handful of times inside the top 10 already on the Challenge tour, I think he will be high in confidence. Likewise with Daniel Gavins, already a winner this year on the main tour and following a top 10 last week in Scotland. I think he may be good value…
As for me, I’m working hard on my game at Atalaya golf and country club ahead of the winter schedule. Speed training is the order of the day, along with tightening up on distance control with my irons from the 125-175 yard distances.
Until next week!
