I am back at York today for 1 ride in the last. There are some fantastic races today, most notably the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes.
2:25 – Lonsdale Cup
This looks a hot renewal of this race. The rain hasn’t come for Trueshan, who won very impressively under Hollie Doyle in the Group 1 Goodwood Cup on heavy ground. He carries a 3lb penalty for that win and I think it’ll be hard work to give weight to STRADIVARIUS (6/4
) on this ground who arrives here fresh, and he’ll love the fast ground. Andrew Balding’s Spanish Mission has looked very progressive this season and he has won here at York, but he might lack the star quality of Stradivarius. If Stradivarius runs below par, then he looks the obvious one to take advantage!
3:00 – Gimcrack Stakes
This is always a great race for two-year-olds, and this looks no different. Lusail looked smart when winning at Newmarket, but he didn’t run at Goodwood due to the ground being soft. Berkshire Shadow did run at Goodwood, but he didn’t enjoy the soft ground. I think I’d side with BERKSHIRE SHADOW (10/3
) from those two as he’s got such a smart turn of foot.
3:35 – Nunthorpe Stakes
This is an exciting race on paper with any number of horses that can win. Golden Pal is the buzz horse – he comes over from USA and is a real speed ball. He could prove hard to catch under Frankie Dettori. I’d love to see the two-year-old CHIPOTLE win for Hollie Doyle and Eve Johnson Houghton. He gets a huge amount of weight from the others and only carries 8 stone 1lbs. He loves the fast ground and I think he could go close.

KING TRITON (10/1
) is my only ride of the day. I’ve never ridden him before, but he looked useful when winning at Thirsk on his latest start. It is my first ride for Grant Tuer who is an extremely shrewd trainer. He is owned by Edward Ware who is a good friend of mine. I rode my first winner after losing my claim on a horse of his called Rawdon at Haydock in 2005, so this would be amazing if I could win at York for him. He has a good chance of building on his win at Thirsk and I’m looking forward to riding him.
I’m over in France tomorrow riding in a Group 2!
Stay safe,
Hayley!
