On Thursday, day two of Salisbury’s main summer attraction is headlined by the Group 3 Sovereign Stakes, with Sir Michael Stoute eyeing a record-equalling third win in five years.
They race at Salisbury from 1.15pm-5.10pm and our tipster has a race-by-race look at the card. Watch all the Salisbury action, alongside every race from the UK and Ireland, via live streaming when logged into MansionBet.
1.15 – Byerley Stud British EBF Restricted Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (7f)
Mistrix looks a solid contender for George Scott and Oisin Murphy, the filly having gone within a short-head of success on her debut at Doncaster last month. After running well at the same venue on her debut in June, THEBEAUTIFULGAME has since run another very promising second in an Epsom contest that has thrown a pair of next-time-out winners. Tom Clover’s daughter of Slade Power has a big shout now.
Selection: Thebeautifulgame @ 7/2
1.45 – Sorvio Insurance Brokers Novice Stakes (7f)
Good Humour made a pleasing start to his career on the AW back in the winter and is probably best forgiven his comeback at Doncaster three weeks ago, where a tardy beginning compromised his hopes. He can do better. Tawaazon could have a role to play but UNIQUE CUT took third over C&D on debut last month and should improve on that effort now with faster ground in her favour.
Selection: Unique Cut @ 6/4
2.20 – Sorvio Insurance Brokers Novice Stakes (7f)
Makashi is consistent but starting to look a bit exposed and comes here off a disappointing run last time. Baron Slick was back from a long absence with a fair third at Brighton last month and is capable of better again but PEINTRE D’ETOILES chased home a subsequent winner at Lingfield (7f, heavy) on second start last month and has excellent prospects now for a stable and jockey in super form of late.
Selection: Peintre D’Etoiles @ 15/8
2.55 – Peter Britton 60 Years Racing At Salisbury Fillies’ Handicap (6f)
Silent Flame arrives at the top of her game for Ed Millan and Oisin Murphy and officially has 3lb in hand, another major bid for glory is likely from the daughter of Al Kazeem but AMOR DE MI VIDA might be worth chancing against her. She won over 5f here on seasonal return and has been largely consistent since over the minimum trip. Archie Watson’s charge is proven at this distance and races from an unchanged mark on the back of an Ascot second 20 days ago.
Selection: Amor De Mi Vada @ 5/1
3.30 – Wateraid Mildren Construction Handicap (1m)
After a couple of lacklustre efforts to begin the season, FITZROVIA was right back in the groove when winning an apprentice contest at Bath (1m, good) eight days ago and the Ed De Giles-trained 6YO gets to line-up here without a penalty for that smooth win. Andrea Atzeni takes over in the saddle and they look well-placed to go in again.
Selection: Fitzrovia @ 9/4
4.05 – D & N Construction Sovereign Stakes (Group 3, 1m)
Magellan didn’t fire in the French Derby last time but drops in class now and is a 3YO to reckon with in this field but Sir Michael Stoute has won this race twice in the last four years and can do so again here with SOLID STONE under last year’s winning rider Richard Kingscote. A decisive Listed winner over this trip at Windsor in May (with some of these behind) he’s twice made the frame since over 1m2f in good races at Royal Ascot and Newbury and should excel back at this trip.
Selection: Solid Stone @ 11/2
4.40 – British EBF Premier Fillies’ Handicap (1m4f)
Eve Johnson Houghton’s HYANNA is a former C&D winner and has also gone close in this race in the past. After starting the season off a mark of 99, she’s now rated 7lb lower and comes back to this venue having run very well in second under a big weight on the all-weather at Kempton last week, only giving best to a promising 3YO rival. William Buick’s mare looks primed for a big run on that evidence.
Selection: Hyanna @ 6/1
5.10 – Kevin Hall & Pat Boakes Memorial Handicap (1m4f)
ZIKANY may close out a good afternoon for Sir Michael Stoute and Richard Kingscote by landing the finale. The Zoffany colt was on the mark at Windsor in May over a similar trip and ran well (third) under a penalty at Newbury soon after. There’s more to come from him in all probability, though Encourage could be a key danger in the Royal silks.
Selection: Zikany @ 5/2
