Oh no! Barcelona announced that Lionel Messi would no longer be staying with the club thus sparking a scramble for the little genuis’ signature. There are plenty of pundits that think the ‘financial and structural obstacles‘ will be overcome and that the Argentinian will stay at the Nou Camp but realistically there’s only likely to be two other clubs in Europe that can afford him.
PSG lead the betting at 4/5 (Paddy Power), while it’s 7/4 that he remains a Barcelona player. Man City are 7/1 to add Messi to their ranks or you can have 16/1 that he opts to see out the rest of his career at ANY club in the MLS. Plenty of other Premier League clubs are listed in the betting or you can have 22/1 on Juventus pulling off an incredible move that would see Messi and Ronaldo team up to tear up Serie A.
On the pitch, St Johnstone‘s 1-1 draw with Galatasaray was fantastic, and well deserved but it probably still wasn’t the most impressive result from a British club on Thursday night, that honour falls to Welsh side The New Saints who were 4-0 up with minutes to go against Viktoria Plzen, who graced the Champions League just a couple of seasons ago. The loss of two late goals took some shine off the win but they’ve given themselves a great chance to progress.
Attention turns to domestic football on Friday and the return of the Football League in England. Bournemouth and West Brom kick-off the season with both eyeing a return to the Premier League.
Both clubs have new managers at the helm, with Scott Parker’s appointment for the Cherries raising a few eyebrows as he’ll now attempt to gain promotion with his new club at the expense of his former club Fulham, who will most likely be there or thereabouts at the top of the table.
Both squads look evenly matched and with no form to go on it’s impossible to call the winner. Home advantage sees Bournemouth favourites at 13/10 with the Baggies at 21/10. Mark Walker has previewed the match for us and has suggested three plays if you’re having a bet.
Ligue 1 also begins on Friday and Tolu has previewed the match between Monaco and Nantes, which is live on BT Sport 2.
We had some success in Ireland last Friday night and there’s another bet worth a second look from Dublin again this week. In the First Division UCD host top of the table Shelbourne. The visitors are unbeaten in 17 and enjoy a nine point lead at the summit. They’ve tripped up in the last few weeks, winning just one of their last four but look overpriced to get the better of mid-table UCD.
They appeal at 31/20 to win but the safer pick looks to be to back them on the Draw No Bet market at 10/11 at Bet365.
