HERE WE GO! 70 days since St Johnstone lifted the Scottish Cup to complete a historic cup double we’re back at the start of a brand new Scottish season.
Sure we’ve had the group stages of the new Premier Sports Cup and a trio of teams already in European action but the real stuff kicks-off today and it’s great to have it back.
Champions Rangers get us underway at Ibrox where they host Livingston and can get punters off to a winning start. The Gers kept a remarkable 26 clean sheets in 38 league games last season and look well-equipped to build their title defence on a solid back-line once more.
Livi look vulnerable this season and will do very well to repeat their top-six finish. They don’t have much of a record at Ibrox and it could be a long afternoon in front of over 20,000 celebrating Gers fans.
Rangers have been all but backed off the boards, in to 2/11 but a bet that’s served us well in the Premier Sports Cup appeals again. Back the Blues to score over 1 goal and Livingston to score under 1 goal at 11/10 on a Bet365 BetBuilder.
Rivals Celtic need to wait until 8pm to get their campaign started with a tricky trip to newly-promoted Hearts. The deficiences in Celtic’s squad have been well documented and their Champions League exit at the hands of Midtjylland was less of a surprise than it should have been.
Manager Ange Postecoglou seems to be fighting and uphill battle to get new players in but Carl Starfelt and possibly Kyogo Furuhashi will be added to the squad for the trip to Tynecastle.
Unsurprisingly there’s been a bit of money for Hearts who have been backed in to 7/2 while the Hoops simply can’t be trusted at the moment at a short-looking 7/10.
The aformentioned St Johnstone (evens) can get off to a winning start with a win at Malky Mackay’s Ross County and there should be goals when Dundee mark their return to the top flight with a visit from St Mirren. Over 2.5 Goals pays 6/5 at Bet365.
As mentioned yesterday at 23/20, Dunfermline look a value bet to open their Championship campaign with a win at Morton. The Pars have made a strong start to the season, qualifying from their Premier Sports Cup group stage under new gaffer Peter Grant. Hosts Morton are favourites to go down from the Championship and look like they’ll struggle for goals this season.
In League one Cove Rangers can take advantage of the fact that Falkirk have barely trained this week. The Bairns had to forfeit two Cup matches and have had to endure a difficult couple of weeks.
Queen’s Park have been backed in to favourites to win the League One title with some bookies but they’ve a testing opener at East Fife. Even money seems a little short for an away win against a side that have been round the block a few times.
League Two looks like it’ll be all about Kelty Hearts this season. The newly promoted are now just 8/11 to go up as champions having opened up around 6/5. If the money is to be believed they should be a banker at 4/11 to beat Cowdenbeath but they’re now too short to back.
Super Single
- Rangers to score Over 1 goal and Livingston to score Under 1 goal 11/10 (Bet365 BetBuilder)
Top Treble
- St Johnstone
- Dunfermline
- Cove Rangers
- Treble pays 57/10 at Bet365
