Not strictly horse racing but England losing in the European Championship final versus Italy must have felt akin to when Maljimar got gubbed by Witchita Lineman in the dying strides of the 2009 William Hill Trophy Chase at the Festival, to many.
I was on Maljimar that day, but fortunately I was on Italy at average Betfair odds of 5.2 for the Euros so my personal pain was tempered somewhat on Sunday night with the backup of a nice “green” book.
As the old saying goes … “Never let your heart rule your head” when it comes to betting.

Galileo Passes
The world’s most famous racehorse sire Galileo died last week at the age of 23.
Winner of the 2001 Derby, Galileo produced numerous champions including the legendary Frankel. Other famous progeny included Rip Van Winkle, Nathaniel, Waldgeist, Australia, Ulysses, Cape Blanco and New Approach.
Coolmore Stud announced he was put to sleep “on humane grounds owing to a chronic, non-responsive, debilitating injury to the left fore foot”.

Weekly Roundup
From the Newmarket July meeting to York, Ascot and even Deauville on Sunday, there was a heady mix of summer Group action coming at us from all angles last week. Let’s take a brief look through some of the highlights.
Pontefract
- Last Tuesday I was lucky enough to witness in person Ryan Moore cruising to a ten-length Pipalong Stakes victory aboard the Cheveley Park-owned Lights On at Pontefract.
- It was actually a fifth win in the race for the Cheveley Stud, after Chorist (2004), Red Bloom (2005), Exhort (2019) and Romola last year. Connections are looking going to the Valiant Stakes at Ascot next with her.
- On the same card, Corinthia Knight, under Hollie Doyle, registered his 13th career success for the Ontoawinner group. The horse has now amassed over £340k in prize money and is a syndication owners dream.
Newmarket
- Charlie Appleby’s three-year-old Yibir beat Mandoob and Dancing King in the Bahrain Trophy. Appleby believes he’s going to be a nice horse for next year.
- Lusail gave the Hannon family a remarkable ninth victory in the G2 Tattersalls July Stakes and will head to Goodwood next.
- Sir Ron Priestley made every yard of the running in the mile and a half Princess of Wales’s Tattersalls Stakes, turning over odds-on favourite Al Aasy in the process. The Irish Leger will be his next big target.
- Sandrine was given quotes around the 16-1 mark for next year’s 1000 Guineas after she took the Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes.
Snow Lantern beat Mother Earth and Alcohol Free in a thrilling finish to the Falmouth Stakes. - Superlative Stakes victor Native Trail will be looking at the G1 National Stakes at the Curragh next before the Vertem Futurity Trophy at Doncaster or the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardère.
- Ed Walker’s Starman ran out an impressive winner of the Darley July Cup. A potential next port of call for the newly crowned G1 scorer could be the Sprint Cup at Haydock.
Ascot
- Tilsit produced the outstanding performance of the weekend to capture Ascot’s feature race, the G2 Summer Mile. Charlie Hills has an entry for him in the Sussex Stakes later this month.
York
- Hukum claimed a second G3 prize when triumphant in the Silver Cup Stakes at York.
- Johnny Drama earned a hard-fought victory in the John Smith’s Cup for Andrew Balding and young jockey Joshua Bryan.
- Winter Power put in a blistering performance in the Listed City Walls Stakes and put herself in the frame for a crack at the Nunthorpe.
Deauville - Ken Condon’s Laws Of Indices was a surprise 28/1 winner of the Group 1 Prix Jean Prat at Deauville on Sunday. Condon is hopeful of returning to France for the Prix de la Foret at Longchamp in October.
Coming up…
Things are a little quiet this week before Glorious Goodwood but next Saturday sees the Weatherbys Super Sprint Stakes take place at Newbury.
I shall be siding with the Richard Hannon-trained Gubbass as soon as the race is priced up.
