Congratulations ITALY!
It felt almost inevitable that the final of a brilliant tournament would go all the way, and like so many years before that mean heartache for England, but scenes of joy for the Azzurri who won the trophy on penalties.
The two sides couldn’t be separated after 120 mins whch meant the destination of the trophy had to be decided from the spot, a 4/1 shot which was flagged up alongside the Draw after 90 minutes on yesterday’s thread.
Pre-tournament the Italians were 7/1 shots to be crowned European Champions so congratulations to those of you backed from from the outset.
Few would’ve backed Italian ‘Keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to be named Player of the Tournament. The stopper was instrumental in Roberto Mancini’s sides shot-out wins on the way to the gold medal.
18-year-old Pedri was chosen as Young Player of the Tournament for his role in helping Spain to the semi-finals and tournament top scorers.
Top Goalscorer was shared by Patrick Shick of Czech Republic and Cristiano Ronaldo who both finished on five goals apiece.
England fans and pundits are already turnign their attention to next year’s World Cup in Qatar, which will be a very different proposition for all nations involved. Gareth Southgate’s side have been shortened to 17/2 with Paddy Power, but can still be backed at 10/1 with William Hill.
New European Champions, Italy are as big as 16/1 with Bet365. Joint favourites are France at 6/1 alongside Brazil, who lost out Argentina in the Copa America final in the early hours of Sunday morning. Lionel Messi and co and 12/1 for success in Qatar.
