While English football fans work themselves into a frenzy at the prospect of “football coming home” tomorrow night, fans of the beautiful game north of the border have some more down to earth action to get excited about on Saturday.
Friday night saw the start of the Scottish season with two games in the Premier Sports Cup and the games come thick and fast today with 12 games from the group stages of the competition and the first chance to get a proper Saturday coupon on in weeks.
Of course, punters will need to tread carefully at this early stage of the season but there could still be some value around if you do your homework.
Hearts return to the top flight this season but their campaign begins at League One Peterhead. There’s been plenty of question marks over Robbie Neilson’s stewardship, despite him leading Hearts to promotion, but the Jambos’ board have kept their faith in him and his side are 1/7 to start with a win. The capital club still boast one of the best squads in the country on paper and could be a force to be reckoned with in the Premiership.
That 1/7 price is way too short but a BetBuilder featuring two or more Hearts goals plus a clean sheet (Peterhead under 1 goal) pays 13/10.
Kilmarnock massively underperformed last season and begin with a visit to Lowland League side East Kilbride. The K-Park side are another with huge ambitions but Killie should be too good for them at odds of around 1/5.
One team that over-achieved last term were Livingston who reached the final of this competition last season and finished 6th in table after tailing off at the end of the season. Hosts Brechin City dropped out of the top ranks for the first time in 67 years when they lost out in a play-off to Kelty Hearts and it could be a long way back for the Glebe Park side. This looks the most one-sided match of the day with Livi as short as 1/12.
Brechin scored just 13 goals in a truncated season of 22 games last term and a Livingston clean sheet could be the order of the day at 4/5.
Cove Rangers should be worth watching again this season. Paul Hartley’s side narrowly missed out on back-to-back promotions in a play-off against Airdrieonians but they’ve added more experience in the shape of Ian Vigurs and Ross Draper who both know their way around football in the north of Scotland. With a squad that already includes the likes of Megginson, Fyvie, Yule and McAllister they’ll be there or therabouts in a competitive League One.
They can start with a win against a Stirling Albion who finished strongly in League Two to claim a top half finish.
Both Greg and SlipsTips are looking to Scandanavia for their best bets on Saturday. The Swedish Allsvenskan is in the spotlight for SlipsTips who has a 4/5 single in the AIK v Varbergs BoIS match. In the same league Greg is banking on Malmö to deliver alongside goals in one of the five Eliterserien matches in Norway on Saturday for his Bet of the Day.
