It’s the middle afternoon of the July Festival at Newmarket on Friday and there is a classy card headlined by the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes for fillies and mares.
Racing at Newmarket is from 1.15pm-4.45pm and you can watch all the action via live streaming when logged into MansionBet – alongside every race from the UK and Ireland. Our tipster marks your card for the second afternoon on the July Course.
1.15 – Weatherbys Bloodstock Pro British EBF Maiden Stakes (7f)
After finding only Dhabab (ran well in the Coventry Stakes) too strong on debut at Leicester last month, SWEEPING has himself run a very pleasing fourth in the Chesham at that same meeting upped to 7f on soft ground.
This trip then should not be a worry for him and Archie Watson’s promising colt can provide Hollie Doyle with the opening winner at Newmarket.
Selection: Sweeping @ 11/4
1.50 – bet365 Handicap (Heritage Handicap, 1m2f)
Peter The Great has been handed an opening mark of 92 and could do well from there, while Lord Protector likely found the trip too long when shedding his unbeaten record last time out.
He has claims down in distance but last month’s Britannia Stakes fourth at Ascot was a fine reappearance from DUBAI HONOUR, leading home his group. He’s upped in trip and looks a player for William Haggas and James Doyle.
Selection: Dubai Honour @ 9/2
2.25 – Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes (Fillies’ Group 2, 6f)
After a winning debut on the all-weather at Kempton in May, SANDRINE took the Albany at Royal Ascot last month over 6f on soft ground, dominating late on after travelling very smoothly through the race.
This faster surface can play to her hands and the Bobby’s Kitten filly can confirm superiority over Hello You and Oscula (second and third in that race) en route to making it 3-3 for the Andrew Balding team.
Selection: Sandrine @ 2/1
3.00 – Bet365 Trophy (Heritage Handicap, 1m6f)
PRINCE ALEX won 5-5 in handicaps last season for trainer Ralph Beckett and could still have more to offer.
The Excelebration gelding looked a bit shy of his best on comeback at Salisbury in May but, three weeks later, was only narrowly denied in a 1m6f Goodwood contest by a subsequent winner (Hyanna more than five-lengths behind in third). Rossa Ryan’s mount is a big player on that evidence.
Selection: Prince Alex @ 15/2
3.35 – Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes (Fillies’ & Mares’ Group 1, 1m)
The Classic class are strongly represented here with Alcohol Free, Snow Lantern and MOTHER EARTH the first three home in last month’s Coronation Stakes at Ascot.
All have their claims again, but perhaps the ground was against Newmarket’s 1000 Guineas winner there and Mother Earth can reverse the form and recapture her supremacy for Ryan Moore and Aidan O’Brien.
She looks some value at the prices, while Lady Bowthorpe is putting together a fine season and joins Queen Power as major threats amongst the older contenders.
Selection: Mother Earth @ 6/1
4.10 – Cash Out At bet365 Handicap (6f)
Inveigle won very easily last time out at Yarmouth and should again go well from 6lb higher, but this is tougher stuff.
NO NONSENSE looked a rather unlucky loser over C&D 15 days ago, getting caught in some trouble before rattling home fast. He’s only 1lb higher now and looks set to take advantage of this sort of mark before too long.
Selection: No Nonsense @ 9/2
4.45 – Moet & Chandon Handicap (5f)
Show Me Show Me has a 5lb penalty for scoring at Hamilton two weeks ago but warrants plenty thought; while Han Solo Berger is operating from a declining mark and could outrun his price.
CHARLIE FELLOWES acquitted himself rather well attempting to give weight to older rivals at Chester (5f, good) last time out and George Scott’s charge is worth of some each-way interest in a tough finale.
Selection: Charlie Fellowes @ 12/1
