With a ‘home’ semi-final against either Denmark or Czech Republic lying in wait England won’t get a better chance to reach the final of a major tournament if they can overcome Ukraine tonight.
Spain and Italy secured thier semi-final berths with wins over Switzerland and Belgium respectively on Fridsay night. The Spanish made heavy weather of it, eventually succeeding via a penalty shoot-out whereas Italy out-foxed a disappointing Belgium who exit too early once more.
It was a brilliant affair in Munich with both sides giving it their all. The Italians played at a high tempo and fully deserved to progress. They put so much in to each match that you just hope they don’t burn themsleves out before the final.
On to Saturday, and the appetiser before the main course is in far-flung Azerbaijan where Denmark and Czech Republic clash.
The Danes have more motivation than most following the plight of Christian Eriksen who continues to recover from the heart attack he suffered in the opening match. The bookies make the Danes 11/10 favourites to win inside the 90 minutes.
The Czechs, ranked 30 places below Denmark, are no mugs and in Patrick Schick have one of the breakthrough players of the tournament. The Leverskusen striker is a 6/1 shot to open the scoring at Bet365 or 9/4 to score anytime. The Czechs are 15/4 to win but Mark Walker reckons they face an uphill struggle in his match preview.
And so to Rome where England are just 2/11 to qualify. As we’ve seen throughout the tournament there aren’t many easy games and that price feels really short.
England have yet to concede but this will be thier first match aawy from Wembley so will have to adapt to new surroundings.
Ukraine qualified from the group stages as lowest ranked of those who finished third, winning just one of their three matches. They then won in extra time against Sweden thanks to a 121st minute strike by Artem Dovbyk so it’s fair to say they’re fortunate to find themselves this deep in to the tournament.
Anything other than an England win would be a huge shock but SlipsTips has found some even money value thanks to a Bet365 BetBuilder in his match preview.
