Here We Go! After taking 36 games to elimate eight nations the European Championships step up a gear on Saturday as the knock-out stages of the competition explode in to action.
Either Wales or Denmark will be first to book a quarter-final berth when they meet in Amsterdam in the 5pm kick-off, live on BBC One.
The Welsh could’ve done a whole lot worse than be handed a tie with Denmark in the last 16. The Danes are currently ranked 10th in the official FIFA World Rankings, placing them above the likes of Germany (12th), Croatia (14th) and Netherlands (16th) but the Dragons aren’t far behind them in 17th and this is an eminently winnable tie for Robert Page’s side.
In Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey they’ll have the two best players on the park on their day but they’re ably assisted by a strong supporting cast and a club mentality that could see them emulate their wonderful success of 2016 that saw them elimanted by eventual winners Portugal in the semi-finals.
Sure the Danes have extra motivation to go deep in to the competition on behalf of the stricken Christian Eriksen but 2/5 on them to qualify seems extremely short. Conversely then the 7/4 on Wales to march on to the quarters looks worth taking on.
Saturday’s other match sees the Italian juggernaut arrive at Wembley for a knock-out tie with Austria. Roberto Mancini’s side have been untouchable at the tournament so far and are now a remarkable 30 matches unbeaten.
Even more astounding is their 11-game run without conceding. 9/20 to win becomes a much healthier 6/5 when you take Italy to win to nil. Like the great Italian teams of the past this particular vintage just love to defend but they’re no slouches going forward either. The Azzurri should see off Austria, who racked up six points in Group C, to set-up a mouth-watering quarter-final clash with either Belgium or Portugal in Munich.
