1.15 Haydock
Now a 0-90 handicap for older horses rather than three-year-olds, this 1m4f contest has a trappy feel despite the small field of six runners.
For all that Doubling Dice, Mark Of Gold and Midrarr looked like improving sorts last year, they come here on the back of heavy defeats, which makes it hard to get away from Master The Stars.
The Ed Dunlop-trained top weight has been crying out for this step up in trip.
Selection: Master The Stars SP
1.45 Haydock
Sprinters tend to congregate towards the stands’ side rail when conditions are testing at Haydock, so it could pay to focus on those drawn high.
The in-form Capote’s Dream will likely head the market as he looks for his fourth win this season, but there is far more value in backing Bernardo O’Reilly, who finished sixth in this race last year and ran with promise on his reappearance at Ascot.
Selection: Bernardo O’Reilly 14/1
2.20 Haydock
El Astronaute is back to retain his crown in this Listed sprint, but he may have trouble fending off last year’s runner-up, Tarboosh.
The Paul Midgley-trained eight-year-old will be suited by the likely fast gallop – El Astronaute, Ornate and Zargun will duel early – and he proved he’s ready to strike with an encouraging seasonal reappearance at Musselburgh last month.
Selection: Tarboosh 13/2
2.55 Haydock
There is no standout performer in this field after the Kirsten Rausing-owned pair – Albaflora and Alpinista – were taken out at the final declarations stage.
Instead, her white and green silks will be carried by Oriental Mystique, who bypassed a Sandown entry earlier this week to run here.
She should be better suited by Haydock than Goodwood, where she finished third on her return.
Selection: Oriental Mystique 11/4
3.30 Haydock
Safe Voyage and 7f at Haydock on testing ground go together better than bread and cheese. Despite giving weight away to all of his rivals, it is hard to ignore Safe Voyage’s impressive form figures of 11112 over this course and distance, which includes a win in this race in 2019.
He can be excused for his Lockinge performance when last seen.
Selection: Safe Voyage 11/4
4.05 Haydock
Although he is coming back off a long absence against race-fit rivals, Blackrod’s presence in this contest is most intriguing.
He finished runner-up to subsequent Mill Reef second Fivethousandtoone on debut last year, before running away with a novice event at Hamilton.
Soft ground was given as an excuse for his below-par performance last time, but his pedigree suggests he will handle the deep ground.
Selection: Blackrod SP
4.40 Haydock
Tom Dascombe’s 17 per cent strike-rate (116-685, +£208.20 to £1 level stakes) at Haydock shouldn’t be overlooked.
He runs bottom weight Falcon Brook in this closing handicap. Although all of his recent form has come on the all-weather, he showed promise on debut at this track last year and could be leniently treated on the return to turf.
Selection: Falcon Brook SP
