Update: Tiger Roll has now been withdrawn from this year’s Grand National meaning there will be no hat-trick attempt. He won another Cross Country Chase at the Cheltenham Festival doing handstands recently and connections may be rueing their decision to withdraw him due to his allotted weight.

When entries closed for the 2021 Grand National at the start of February there were 106 horses in the list.
Naturally the 2018 and 2019 winner Tiger Roll was the headline act and given the authority of his most recent Grand National win, tempered by the cancellation of the race in 2020 and a couple of lacklustre efforts this term – beaten 29 lengths when sixth in a maiden race on the flat and then pulled-up in cross county handicap at Cheltenham in November.
However Tiger Roll bounced back in some style at this year’s Cheltenham Festival slamming Easysland in the Cross County race. After that performance it’s a shame we will be unable to see Tiger go for the hat-trick this year with his connections unhappy with the weight the handicapper had set for the 2-time winner. But perhaps the handicapper was right if the Cross Country is anything to go by.
Key Dates

- March 2 – A round of cuts will be made from the entry list
- March 23 – A second round of scratchings will follow three weeks later
- April 5 – The five-day confirmation stage
- April 8 – The final field of 40 runners (plus reserves) will be confirmed at the last declaration stage
- April 10 – Grand National Day! (The race is due off at 5.15pm and is live on ITV in the UK)
In layman’s terms should you select one horse at random at this stage, there is about a 40% of you getting a run for your money.
So, as a punter, the key to success is identifying a Grand National horse which will definitely run, or getting a price which is 60% better than the likely SP of a horse which might not take part in the greatest steeplechase of them all.

Potters Plan
An intended runner – meaning one that is highly enough rated to ensure a run from the higher end of the handicap and connections that have also indicated the race is their target – is Potters Corner.
The winner of last year’s ‘virtual Grand National’ is trained by Christian Williams who just this week was quoted as saying: “Aintree is now his main target this year. He’s getting a bit older so we want to keep him as fresh as we can.
He can be backed at 25/1 with bet365* which is probably the best place to back him as they are offering enhanced each-way odds giving you five paying places instead of the standard four.

Have a Tiny Bet on Tini
As for a big-priced horse who will SP considerably shorter (more than 60 percent shorter) should he face the starter on race day… Santini looks worthy of an investment at 50/1 with William Hill.
Trainer Nicky Henderson may have finally accepted this horse, which he holds in the highest regard, is not going to win a Cheltenham Gold Cup and last year’s excellent second spot in that contest came when this 9-year-old was in the prime of his career.
Being beaten 17 lengths into third by the veteran Native River in the Grade 2 Cotswold Chase earlier this year may appear disappointing on the surface. But it underlined this horse is a dour stayer who can gallop forever and might just relish the demanding four-mile two-furlong Grand National trip.
