England host Scotland at Wembley in just 86 days time in one of the most hotly anticipated matches of Euro 2020 but for now it’s all about them starting on their journeys to Qatar 2022 as their qualification campaigns kick-off against San Marino and Austria respectively.
San Marino are (in)famously the lowest ranked team in the world and of course are regularly on the wrong end of a hammering. England have scored 37 goals in their 6 meetings with the minnows. Over 5.5 England goals is just 3/10 and seven or more goals for Gareth Southgate’s side a paltry 4/7.
Any goal based bet is just a punt but if you fancy San Marino to hold out for the opening 11 minutes you can have 5/6 at Bet365, as suggested in Mark Walker’s preview. Marcus Rashford is likely to miss out so Calvert-Lewin might get the nod and the Everton hitman is 3/1 to open the scoring.
Scotland have a more difficult opening fixture with the visit of Austria to Hampden. But the Scots are looking a lot more solid under Steve Clarke and look a touch too big to win at 23/10. On the draw no bet they also appeal at 5/4.
Clarke has been unable to solve his striking problem thus far so he’s turned to Che Adams in a bid to add some potency to his front line. The Southampton striker is 17/2 to open the scoring and 11/4 to net anytime. Hibs’ Kevin Nesbit may also be handed his debut. He’s similarly priced to score on his international bow.
KevMac reckons it could be a close encounter in his match preview and has backed things to be level at half-time.
Germany, Spain and Italy are all in action on Thursday too with latter hosting Ian Barraclough’s Northern Ireland. We’ve that match previewed alongside the rest of Thursday’s stand-out matches below.
