Borussia Monchengladbach vs Borussia Dortmund
All eyes will be on Marco Rose as his present club — Borussia Monchengladbach — host his future club — Borussia Dortmund — in the DFB-Pokal quarter-finals.
With Bayern Munich no longer in this season’s competition, the DFB-Pokal 2021 odds have these two teams among the favourites to win it all.
However, Rose’s Foals have dipped in form significantly since his move to Dortmund was confirmed a few weeks ago.
On the other side, Edin Terzic’s Dortmund have picked up a hat-trick of wins since the announcement of Rose’s appointment. They will now look to be a thorn on the side of Rose’s Gladbach and book a place in the cup semi-finals.
Talking Points
Bloom is off Rose at Gladbach
The Marco Rose era at Gladbach is not heading toward a happy ending. The Foals are winless in their last five games in all competitions, a run which began with a disastrous derby defeat to Koln. They have also suffered three-straight defeats since the news broke that Rose would be headed to Dortmund next year.
Gladbach are almost surely out of the Champions League after their 2-0 home defeat to Manchester City in the first leg of their round-of-16 tie. Meanwhile, their chances of qualifying for next year’s competition are looking slim after defeats to relegation strugglers Mainz and RB Leipzig.
Gladbach looked on course for a huge win over second-placed Leipzig as they went 2-0 up after 20 minutes. But the Red Bulls stormed back and scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner to break the Foals’ hearts.
The Foals will no doubt be low in morale after another crushing defeat, and they could also be quite fatigued after back-to-back tough games against City and Leipzig.
Rose will likely make a number of changes to his side, with Lars Stindl, Alassane Plea, and Florian Neuhaus set to return to the starting XI after only coming on as substitutes against Leipzig.
Dortmund getting back to their best
While Gladbach have struggled since the announcement of Rose’s departure to Dortmund, BVB have been busy picking up some big wins.
They kicked things off with a terrific 3-2 win away at Sevilla in their Champions League first leg. They then followed that up with a dominant 4-0 win over rivals Schalke in the Revierderby and a 3-0 victory over Arminia Bielefeld over the weekend.
Midfielder Mahmoud Dahoud has been a big part of Dortmund’s recent revival. The German midfielder has started the last three games and has been in excellent form, scoring a couple of goals.
Meanwhile, young stars Jadon Sancho and Erling Haaland have been exceptional over the last few weeks. Sancho has five goals and five assists in his last seven games, while Haaland eight goals and three assists in his last eight.
Sancho has made DFB-Pokal 2021 highlights all throughout this year’s competition as he’s scored in all three rounds thus far. Not to be outdone, Haaland scored twice to help Dortmund overcome Paderborn 3-2 in the last round.
Haaland also scored twice in their 4-2 defeat to Gladbach in January, and Sancho supplied the assist for both goals.
However, Dortmund still have some concerns in defence. Centre-back Manuel Akanji went down with a muscle injury, so Emre Can — who was already filling in for the injured Axel Witsel in defensive midfield — now has to play alongside Mats Hummels in central defence.
History
Dortmund have dominated the Battle of the Borussias over the years. They have won 19 of their last 27 meetings in the Bundesliga, with Gladbach winning just five. BVB also won their most recent DFB-Pokal tie in 2019. Julian Brandt scored a brace as they came from behind to win 2-1.
However, Gladbach beat Dortmund 4-2 in their most recent league meeting in January despite a brace by Erling Haaland. Centre-back Nico Elvedi scored twice as the Foals snapped Dortmund’s run of 12 consecutive wins in this matchup.
This is the first time both clubs have reached the quarter-finals of the DFB-Pokal since 2016-17. Gladbach reached the semis but lost to Eintracht Frankfurt on penalties. Meanwhile, Dortmund went on to win the cup by beating Frankfurt in the final.
Betting Tip
Borussia Monchengladbach vs Borussia Dortmund | 1X2 Borussia Dortmund @ 2.28 | |
March 3, 3:45 (GMT+8) |
SBOTOP odds have Borussia Dortmund as slight 2.28 favourites, with Gladbach priced at 2.96. Meanwhile, a draw is 3.30.
It’s hard to overlook the bad vibes within Gladbach, though. They had already been having quite an underwhelming season even before all the Rose-Dortmund drama, and the confirmation of that news obviously has not helped matters.
While Gladbach certainly have the talent to beat Dortmund, the low morale around the club makes it hard to trust them getting the win.
That’s why I’m backing Dortmund, led by the in-form duo of Haaland and Sancho, to beat the future BVB boss and book their place in the semi-finals.
