Whether there is some kind of unbreakable psychological hold or one of those strange unwritten laws of the football universe, every team has that one annoying opponent that they just can’t ever seem to get the better of.
League positions and current form seem to go out the window when your club meets their bogey team, and whenever fixtures against them arrive, you always fear the worst.
This weekend, up and down the English football pyramid, a number of teams are gearing up to face the nemesis they just can’t quite ever defeat, and we have some bogey team betting tips lined up below with that in mind.
Remember – you can find more free betting tips for the weekend’s football action over on our match predictions page.
FST’s bogey team betting tips
Burnley vs Brighton (Premier League)
Betting tip: Brighton to win
The Seagulls’ confidence will be soaring following successive victories over Tottenham and Liverpool, and their chances of landing another blow at Burnley will be strengthened further by their superb record against the Clarets.
Brighton have lost just two of their last 12 meetings with the Lancashire outfit during a spell of remarkable dominance in what should really be a 50/50 fixture. Albion won 2-1 on their last trip to Turf Moor and more success at the avenue looks possible on Saturday.
Swindon home to Shrewsbury (League One)
Betting tip: Swindon to win
With just two wins in 12 League One games since December, victories have been hard to come by for Swindon Town, though the Robins have cause for more optimism than usual this weekend.
Swindon have been toppled by Shrewsbury just once in the clubs last 10 meetings since 2012, and The Shrews – who have lost three of their last four games – could slip up against their regular antagonists again.
Leyton Orient vs Colchester United (League Two)
Betting tip: Colchester double chance
Colchester are a full six points and eight places below Leyton Orient in the League Two table ahead of their visit to the The Breyer Group Stadium, though The U’s can upset the odds to avoid defeat there on Saturday.
With six wins in their last seven skirmishes with Orient, Colchester’s record in this fixture is excellent, and having beaten their opponents once already this term, John McGreal’s charges should be able to take at least a point from the rematch.
Scunthorpe vs Oldham Athletic (League Two)
Betting tip: Oldham Athletic double chance
Oldham have lost each of their last three home meetings with Scunthorpe, but when the venues are reversed, Athletic tend to do much better at the The Sands Venue Stadium.
The Latics have come up short just once in their last eight trips to The Iron’s stronghold in Lincolnshire, and they are worth backing in the double chance market in their latest jaunt there as a result.
Stevenage vs Morecambe (League Two)
Betting tip: Stevenage to win
With Stevenage embroiled in a relegation battle and Morecambe launching a promotion charge, the odds seem stacked in the visitor’s favour when the Shrimps visit The Lamex Stadium on Saturday, however, Boro’s bogey team powers could make them a coupon buster.
Stevenage are undefeated in six previous meetings with Morecambe and Boro are targeting their fourth straight victory against them on home soil.
