Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers
Manchester United’s march up the Premier League table hit a snag over the weekend after they were held to a 2-2 draw away to Leicester City on Boxing Day.
The Red Devils will look to bounce back right away when they host Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford in midweek.
However, United have been rocky at home this season, while Wolves have caused them quite a few problems over the last few years, so this match may not be as straightforward as the Premier League 2020 betting odds would make it seem.
Talking Points
Bruno still running the show at Man United
Manchester United’s impressive run of consecutive away wins finally ended at six as Leicester City twice came from behind to salvage a 2-2 draw at the King Power Stadium over the weekend. However, United’s unbeaten run remains intact and is now at eight league matches.
United have been significantly better away from Old Trafford this season. They have won just two of their seven home matches, with just nine goals scored. Although, they may have finally turned the corner with their brilliant 6-2 demolition of Leeds United.
Bruno Fernandes scored two goals and set up one more in that impressive win over Leeds and had another goal and assist against Leicester. The Portuguese playmaker is having yet another terrific season with 10 goals and 6 assists in 14 league appearances.
Fernandes continues to show no signs of slowing down despite starting seemingly every single match for United, and it remains to be seen whether manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer finally decides to give him a break against Wolves.
Solskjaer stuck with Daniel James after his impressive showing against Leeds, but the young winger is likely to drop back to the bench this time around.
The likes of Edinson Cavani – who has been in fine form with a goal and an assist in his last two games – Paul Pogba, Mason Greenwood, and Donny van de Beek could all be in line to start as Solskjaer rotates his squad.
Meanwhile, Axel Tuanzebe – who unfortunately conceded the late own goal at Leicester – is likely to continue to deputise at right-back with Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Victor Lindelof injured.
Wolves lacking bite in attack
As of this writing, Wolves have yet to play Tottenham at home. They will head into that match in disappointing form with three losses in their last four, including a 2-1 defeat away to relegation-threatened Burnley.
Although, they did beat Chelsea 2-1 at home, which is a reminder that Wolves remain a dangerous proposition, especially against the big clubs.
With Raul Jimenez still out, Wolves continue to rely on the Portuguese trio of Daniel Podence, Pedro Neto, and Fabio Silva, as well as Adama Traore, to produce Premier League 2020 highlights in attack.
But because all four are so young, Wolves are unable to get much consistency in attack this season. They’ve scored just 14 goals this season, the fifth-fewest in the league.
Unsurprisingly, Wolves have found it tougher to score away from home without Jimenez leading the line. That has led to a much poorer away record overall, with three wins and four defeats in seven matches this season.
The fact that Wolves will have one fewer day to rest before they make the trip to Old Trafford also won’t help manager Nuno Espirito Santo, especially considering he has a much shallower squad to call upon compared to United.
History
Wolves have been quite a thorn in United’s side over the past few years. They’ve lost just once in their last seven meetings against the Red Devils, with two wins and four draws.
Last season, Wolves held United to two draws in the Premier League. They also beat them in back-to-back matches in the FA Cup and the league back in 2019.
However, Wolves have not beaten Man United at Old Trafford in any competition since 1980.
Betting Tip

December 30, 04:00 (GMT+8) |
SBOTOP odds have Manchester United installed as significant 1.59 favourites despite their struggles at Old Trafford this season. Wolves are priced at 6.00 to pick up the away win, while a draw is 3.65.
There tend to be goals whenever United play this season; they have scored three by themselves in five of their last eight league matches and there have been at least 4 goals in six of those eight.
While Wolves have had a reputation as a defensively strong side, that has not quite been the case this season. They haven’t kept a clean sheet in any of their last seven outings and are unlikely to do so at Old Trafford against a United side that’s been banging them in.
But the Red Devils have had their own issues at the back, which could make this a more high-scoring United-Wolves matches in recent years.
