Festive Football Guide

Overview

While we may already be almost halfway through the month of December, the festive football season doesn’t begin in earnest until the 15th December as the Premier League’s first double gameweek of the season kicks into action.

There’s a top flight double header on Tuesday as Wolves and Chelsea face off before the struggling Baggies pay a visit to the Etihad, running parallel to a host of Championship games.

Wednesday ramps up the intensity somewhat as we cast our eyes towards six Premier League fixtures, including the main event that is Liverpool vs Tottenham, along with more EFL action.

It doesn’t end there, though. Thursday completes the double gameweek with another Premier League double header before we have a slight breather on Friday ahead of a full weekend complement of action, including a Sunday bumper clash between Manchester United and Leeds.

The main event

Liverpool vs Tottenham – Wednesday, December 16th (20:00)

Kane Spurs Europa League

The highlight of the week is undoubtedly the early-season clash for the Premier League top spot at Anfield.

Predictably it involves the reigning champions Liverpool, but perhaps more of a surprise is the visitors and, at the time of writing, current Premier League leaders Tottenham Hotspur.

Jose Mourinho’s Spurs side have really gone up a gear this season, with Harry Kane and Heung-min Son forming one of the league’s most lethal attacking partnerships and the Portuguese manager really drilling a winning mentality into his team.

They won the north London derby last weekend and have taken points off Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United this season, but a trip to Anfield will undoubtedly be their biggest challenge to date. Definitely one to watch.

Week 2 – 21st Dec – 27th Dec

Festive Football Guide

Overview

The week of Christmas kicks off with a couple of Premier League games on the Monday as we head to Turf Moor and then Stamford Bridge before our attention shifts to the EFL Cup Quarter Finals on Tuesday and Wednesday, where Arsenal vs Manchester City and Everton vs Manchester United take centre stage.

There’s a whole host of action on the continent in the run up to Christmas day as well as we cast our eyes towards La Liga and Serie A action.

A brief respite for the appropriate festivities begins on Christmas Eve, but we only have to wait until Boxing Day to be thrown back into a footballing frenzy.

By the time you’re sat down with some lunchtime Turkey sandwiches you’ll be watching Leicester vs Manchester United and the action doesn’t really stop until the beginning of 2021, with 20 fixtures being played in that short four day interval.

The main event

Arsenal vs Chelsea – Saturday, December 26th (17:30)

Mikel Arteta Arsenal manager

The first round of fixtures in this bumper four day period has a couple of potentially massive fixtures, but the highlight is likely to come at 5:30pm on Boxing Day when we head to the Emirates for Arsenal vs Chelsea.

Both managed by former fan-favourites at their respective clubs, Arsenal will hope to bridge the gap on the top four with a victory over Frank Lampard’s Chelsea. However, Mikel Arteta is slowly coming under some pressure as his Gunners side continue to disappoint.

This festive period, which includes matches against Burnley, Southampton, Everton and Manchester City before this Chelsea clash, could prove pivotal to his future at the club.

For Lampard, eyes are very much on the title race despite their loss to Everton. Who comes out on top?

Festive Football Guide

Overview

The festive period draws to a close as we enter a new and hopefully much better year.

We finish 2020 with ten fixtures across two days before a slight breather on New Year’s Eve, but the action ramps back up to full intensity in January as another full Premier League schedule is scheduled for the first weekend of 2021.

The official kickoff times and dates are yet to be released for that round, but we’ll be sure to update them when we get confirmation.

The main event

Chelsea vs Manchester City – TBC

Pep Guardiola Man City Champions League

One of the standout clashes of the first round of 2021 fixtures takes us to Stamford Bridge as Manchester City face Frank Lampard’s title contending Blues.

It’s been an odd season for Manchester City so far, but they’re far from written off in the title race and by the time this clash comes round they could be right in the mix.

Chelsea are even more likely to be up there too, and this could turn into a very high-stakes tie in the long and arduous race for the Premier League title.
