WE have a bit of a respite on Monday from the internationals before we go again on Tuesday.
After buzzing in Belgrade it was a sluggish Scotland who lost 1-0 in Slovakia to leave Steve Clarke’s men having to match the Czech Republic’s result on Thursday to win their group. The Czech are at home to near neighbours Slovakia while the Scots travel to Israel and with some of their main men restored I’ll be backing us to win.
England lost to two early goals in Belgium as the world No.1 ranked team clinched top spot in A2.
No England goal beat my Top Treble as Denmark and Austria bagged late winners against Iceland and Northern Ireland respectively.
Well done to all the winners including Kevin Mac who had three winners on the Scotland and Wales games.
Scott Allot’s VIP acca came in at 37-10 thanks to Denmark and Austria’s late revival and SlipsTips and tipped Dries Mertens at 7-2 to score against England.
I spent most of the day flicking between the football and golf as I started a week off before returning full-time to the Record next Sunday (that will be fun!).
There was little drama at The Masters as Dustin Johnson cruised to victory by five shots from Cameron Smith and Sunglae Im. It was a stunning performance from the world No.1 and well done to anyone who tipped him.
The Caddy backed Smith at 70-1 ew and that was an incredible shout. He also won with Rory McIlroy at 12-1 ew as the Ulsterman battled back brilliantly from an opening 75. His Nap was Tiger Woods to beat Phil Mickelson at 8-11 on a 72-hole match bet and he also tipped no hole in one at 6-4 with bet365 and I’m pretty sure that landed too. There are usually a few on the last day at the 16th but organisers did away with the normally friendly pin placement.
I should have listened to Ace but instead was on Bryson DeChambeau who made a pig’s ear of his challenge. The big hitter tried to overpower Augusta but failed miserably and while I lost my stake I was happy the course beat him.
Augusta for me is the best tournament in the world and all the talk before the week started was how DeChambeau could make the course obsolete. Well, the opposite happened DeChambeau will have to eat humble pie and when he comes back next year just concentrate on hitting fairway before he winds up the power.
My only antepost winner was Bernhard Langer who put on a super show aged 63 to be crowned Top Senior at 9-2 ahead of antepost favourite Mickelson.
The German was about 60 yards behind his playing partners off the tee but his course management and short-game brilliance meant he finished one shot ahead of DeChambeau and two clear of defending champions Tiger Woods who had a 10 on the 12th but never gave up and replied with five birdies in the last six. DeChambeau could learn a lot from both of them.
Looks a no bet on Monday with Plymouth vs Portsmouth in League One, France vs Switzerland U-21s and some African Cup of Nations games to look at.
