We had it all in this weekend’s Bundesliga as the big guns plundered three points each but in very different styles.
Bayern smashed Eintracht Frankfurt 5-0 as Lewandowski ripped their visitors apart; RB Leipzig stay top thanks to a late penalty against ten-man Hertha Berlin, and BVB won the Revierderby in style to keep up with the early pacesetters.
Winner: Robert Lewandowski – FC Bayern
The Bundesliga 2020 betting odds here at SBOTOP have FC Bayern heavily odds on to lift another title and, if Lewandowski keeps firing as he is, it will take a herculean effort from someone to stop the Bavarians.
Last week, Bayern started their Champions League campaign with a bang, beating Atletico Madrid 4-0; that result was remarkable in itself as the Pole wasn’t on the score sheet! But normal service was resumed yesterday as Die Bayern battered Eintracht and Lewandowski scored three to take his tally to 10 from the opening five league games.
He slotted home his first of the day after just ten minutes, headed the second midway through the first half and completed his hat-trick on the hour before Leroy Sane and Jamal Musiala added two more.
The man is simply the best.
Loser: Alphonso Davies’ injury
The only note of regret for Bayern head coach Hansi Flick, as his team moved on to 12 points following three consecutive victories, was the serious ankle injury suffered by wide man Alphonso Davies after just five minutes. The Canadian teen will now miss the next 6-8 weeks, which is a blow to the champions.
Winners: Borussia Dortmund
There’s no better way to spend a Saturday than to give your local rivals a right royal stuffing, and that’s exactly what Borussia Dortmund did in the second half of the Revierderby.
BVB against Schalke is always a derby worth looking out for and, after a hard-fought first half, played in front of 300 black and yellow fans, Dortmund let rip in the second. First, Manuel Akanji pounced on a loose ball to open the scoring, before Erling Braut Haaland added a second and Mats Hummels rounded off a good day for Lucien Favre’s team.
The result leaves Dortmund handily placed in third, level with Bayern and a single point behind leaders RB Leipzig.
Losers: FC Schalke 04
But, equally, there’s no worse way to spend a weekend than by losing badly to your fiercest rivals and Schalke fans will have a miserable start to the week when they look at the league table.
While BVB are flying high, Die Knappen are second-from-bottom with just a single point from five games. Head coach Manuel Baum has only been in the job for three games and he has his work cut out.
Winner: Jonas Hofmann – Borussia Monchengladbach
Die Fohlen had made a sluggish start to the 2020/21 Bundesliga season, five points from their opening four games leaving Marco Rose’s attacking outfit hovering around the middle of the league table. And at 2-1 down, away to bottom club and pointless FSV Mainz, with just 15 minutes to go it looked like Die Fohlen’s stop-start season was about to grind to a halt again.
But a cool head from midfield general Jonas Hofmann turned defeat into victory, firstly when Mainz defender Moussa Niakhate blocked a Marcus Thuram shot with his hand. Hoffman took the responsibility and slammed home the equaliser from the penalty spot.
With less than 10 minutes remaining, Hofmann sent over a cross for Matthias Ginter but his header flew wide. But it was Hoffman, two minutes later who swung in a pin-point corner and this time Ginter planted his header home for the winner.
Monchengladbach are up to fifth.
Loser: Deyovaisio Zeefuik – Hertha Berlin
RB Leipzig are top of the table but they needed a helping hand from Netherlands defender Deyovaisio Zeefuik. With Hertha Berlin holding on quite comfortably at 1-1 Zeefuik chopped down Leipzig winger Christopher Nkunku, who was just too fast for him, and he copped for a yellow card.
You’d think with most of the second half still to play, Zeefuik might change his strategy in dealing with Nkunku, but when the French flyer sprinted past him three minutes later well, Zeefuik chopped him down again with the same result.
Red Bull swamped the remaining ten Hertha men and eventually got the winner when Marcel Sabitzer converted a late penalty.
If I was Zeefuik, I’d do my best to avoid the weekend’s Bundesliga 2020 highlights today!
