Golf betting tips and predictions for the CJ Cup and Scottish Championship this week

14/10/2020 admin

Thursday afternoon marks the start of another week in the world of golf, with European Tour and PGA Tour action taking over our screens for the remainder of the week.

This week also marks the beginning of a brand new feature on bet365 when it comes to betting on golf. bet365’s Live Golf Tracker features real time shot-by-shot data, accurate ball tracking on the fairway and green, the ability to navigate between holes through the interactive course visualisation and the inclusion of live streaming of two Par-3 holes per day.

This new introduction is revolutionary to the world of in-play betting, and you can learn more about it here and sign up to bet365 using the banner below.

The CJ Cup betting tips, start time and where to watch

Course and location: Shadow Creek Golf Course, Las Vegas

Start time: 5:45pm on Thursday, October 14th

Where to watch: Sky Sports Golf

The markets for the CJ Cup were thrown into disarray on Tuesday night as Dustin Johnson withdrew from the competition after contracting coronavirus, leaving room for a new favourite to emerge ahead of teeing off at the Par-72, 7,527 yard Shadow Creek course.

Situated in Las Vegas, the Shadow Creek course is making its PGA Tour debut for the fourth edition of the CJ Cup. Strategy and striking power are paramount to success to navigate through the long and obstacle-laden course.

The CJ Cup winner prediction: Justin Thomas at 10/1

The shock news that Dustin Johnson has been struck down by the dreaded Covid-19 has left bookmakers fiddling with the CJ Cup market – and Jon Rahm has emerged as the new favourite.

Johnson was a warm order until he tested positive for the virus. The world number one must head off to rest and recuperate, hopefully getting healthy in time for next month’s Masters.

Rahm must be respected but a dismal second round in the Tour Championship followed by a Saturday 76 in the US Open and a humdrum share of 23rd place may have dented the Spaniard’s confidence. The most likely winner of the CJ Cup is arguably Justin Thomas.

This tournament has been kind to Thomas – he has won two of the previous three editions – and the venue-switch from Nine Bridges, South Korea to Shadow Creek, Las Vegas may not hinder his CJ Cup hat-trick bid.

Thomas could easily fall in love with Shadow Creek, an exclusive venue of which nobody in this elite line-up has intimate knowledge. The course was designed by Tom Fazio – and Thomas has a proud history of performing well on Fazio creations.

The 2017 US PGA was the Major breakthrough of Thomas and it came at Quail Hollow, a Fazio masterpiece, and he won the 2018 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone, another Fazio-crafted layout.

Scottish Championship betting tips, start time and where to watch

Course and location: Torrance Course, St Andrews

Start time: 8am on Thursday, October 14th

Where to watch: Sky Sports Golf from 12:30pm

Lee Westwood returns to the European Tour circuit for the Scottish Championship after refusing to travel stateside for the PGA Tour, and it’s no surprise to see him among the favourites at Torrance Course in St Andrews.

The Par-72, 7,230 yard course can be tricky in windy conditions, but with little in the way of forecasted breeze we can expect a strong showing from the top end of the field.

Scottish Championship winner prediction: Matt Wallace (12/1) and Brandon Stone eachway (40/1)

Englishmen dominate the betting for their trip north of the border this week – Matt Wallace, Lee Westwood, Aaron Rai and Eddie Pepperell are the first four names in the Scottish Championship market.

The new event, which came in to being as a result of a European Tour schedule rejig in the wake of coronavirus, is being staged at the Torrance Course at Fairmont St Andrews. The layout, which is making its Tour debut, is not to be confused with the famous Old Course at St Andrews – the iconic venue which has hosted 29 Opens.

The similarity between the two courses though – which are about four miles apart – is that they can both be destroyed by professionals in calm conditions. As the decades have rolled by, the only defence of the Old Course against the modern pro has been any winds whipping in from the adjacent West Sands Beach. With hardly any breeze forecast this week, expect low scores and trust Wallace and Brandon Stone to make merry.

Wallace, who finished fourth in a high-class Memorial on the PGA Tour in July, has slowly but surely been finding his A-game and appears ready for a title tilt. He has been a prolific champion at every level he has competed and if the Londoner gets a sniff of the trophy on Sunday, he can be expected to grab it.

Stone, Scottish Open champion in 2018, relishes links golf under windless skies and can also be fancied to contend.
