Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur
Whether or not you are a fan, Jose Mourinho is box office stuff and whenever he comes up against a former club it’s worth watching!
Manchester United vs Spurs brings the Red Devils together with their former Premier League manager, who has spent the last few weeks buying players the Red Devils have been after.
He didn’t have the happiest of times during his relatively short tenure at Old Trafford. But now as the head coach for Tottenham and also formerly known as ‘The Special One’, he is smiling again.
He seems happy at Tottenham, although Jose always has something to complain about.
A barely believable penalty decision cost his side a win against Newcastle last week, and he’s raised a concern that his overworked players might not be looked after properly over the International weekend.
But one thing’s for sure. Jose will be fully focussed on preparing his side for their trip to the Theatre of Dreams on Sunday to meet a Manchester United side, who is also straining to keep up with the early pace-setters.
The latest Manchester United vs Spurs betting odds pitch the Red Devils as favourites to win this clash, slightly odds on at 1.89 with the draw at 3.35 and Spurs at 3.69.
It promises to be a great watch for the neutrals.
Mourinho may be a master at winning the big games. But as Spurs boss, he’s only won one point from the two games against the Red Devils and he’ll want to put that right this weekend.
Talking Points
OGS is looking for a creative spark
Manchester United have played two games so far as their start was delayed to allow them to recover from the 2020 Europe League campaign.
But the Red Devils had a shocking start, losing their opener to Crystal Palace in a game swamped in VAR controversy.
They too were on the wrong end of a bizarre penalty decision but they had their fair share of the luck in a second outing.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side got out of jail in a five-goal thriller against Brighton as Bruno Fernandes kept his cool to score a penalty awarded after the final whistle had blown.
And that narrow escape has highlighted the need to get more attacking flair into United’s squad.
One name in the frame is Watford winger Ismaila Sarr as Solskjaer’s summer long pursuit of Jadon Sancho seems to be nearing an end and they have also been linked with Barcelona star Ousmane Dembele and Real Madrid misfit Luka Jovic.
But OGS is unlikely to bring a new face in to meet Spurs, so he will be relying again on Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial for goals.
The head coach will be painfully aware too that his defence has shipped five goals to two sides unlikely to finish in the top 10.
Spurs wait for Bale
Former United boss Mourinho has made two marquee signings from under the noses of his former employers over the summer.
Gareth Bale’s return to Spurs grabbed the headlines last week but the Wales winger won’t be in the Manchester United vs Spurs news.
Tottenham fans will have to wait to see their returning star and the big day might come after the international break when Spurs meet West Ham.
Jose’s other big signing in defender Sergio Reguillon could well feature in this one however.
The Red Devils were close to agreeing a deal with the former Real Madrid star, but Tottenham beat them to his signature when the 23-year-old signed a five-year deal at a fee reported to be £27-M.
With the international break in mind, Mourinho has asked England boss Gareth Southgate to go easy on his stars particularly with Harry Kane, as he tries to juggle Europa League football with a climb up the Premier League table.
Since Spurs’ narrow defeat to Everton on the opening day, they have picked up four points from the next two games with a win against Southampton and the frustrating draw with Newcastle United.
Heung-Min Son has four goals already and is third in the list of Premier League top scorers, and he is behind Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin and 2020 Golden Boot winner Jamie Vardy.
He bagged all four in Spurs’ 2-5 destruction of Southampton before Harry Kane added the fifth.
History
Manchester United fans love this fixture. The Red Devils have won 40 of the 60 meetings in the Premier League era with Spurs winning nine and there have been 11 draws.
And they are in a winning streak of three games in all competitions while Spurs are on a winning run of three away from home and are unbeaten in five.
Betting Tip
Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur | Tottenham Hotspur Asian Handicap +0.50 @ 2.00 | |
October 4, 23:30 (GMT+8) |
The latest odds here at SBOTOP place both these teams as outsiders for a tilt at the title, as Manchester United ranked sixth at odds of 36.00 with Spurs eighth at 55.00, although both have designs on a top four place.
A win in this fixture would confirm the victors’ position as contenders and I think it will be a hard fought clash.
I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see a draw and for Jose to take something away from his former home.
