Jose Mourinho embarks on his first full campaign as Tottenham Hotspur boss this weekend, and the controversial Portuguese tactician – that many have suggested is past his prime – will be determined to kick off a successful series of results with a win in Spurs’ opening episode of the 2020/21 season on Sunday.

Everton will arrive in North London with lofty aspirations of their own however, and with a new star-studded midfield of Allan, Abdoulaye Doucouré and James Rodriguez pulling the strings, the Toffees pose a considerable threat.

Both teams to score

Recent meetings between Spurs and Everton have produced the goal-scoring goods, with both teams finding the net in three of their last four encounters.

Both Tottenham and the Toffees saw that BTTS pattern extend to a good chunk of their final games last season too. Goals were plundered by both teams in nine of Spurs’ last 13 Premier League fixtures of 2019/20, while both teams rattled the net in 10 of Everton’s last 16 top-flight tussles.

With defensive wrinkles from last season to iron out, we think it’s worth backing both sides to take advantage of the other’s own third deficiencies again.

Harry Kane to score anytime

Fit and raring to get back into the goal-scoring groove, Spurs talisman Harry Kane will be desperate to leave last season’s injury worries behind, and armed with a fine record of finding the net against the Toffees, the 27-year-old is worth backing to notch.

Kane has scored nine times for Spurs in appearances against Everton in total, and the Merseysiders know all too well just how potent the centre-forward’s finishing can be.

Kane, of course, is also Tottenham’s designated penalty taker – further heightening his chances of making an impact on the scoresheet on the opening weekend of the new 2020/21 Premier League season.

Over 3.5 cards

Last season’s Premier League meetings between Tottenham and Everton had a real edge to them, and with the tackles flying, a high number of players were carded.

In the first clash between the clubs in November last year, Theo Walcott was booked for Everton in a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park, while Christian Eriksen and Tanguy Ndombele were cautioned for the visitors, with Son-Heung min given his marching orders with ten minutes to go for a rash challenge.

The return fixture in North London in June was just as heated with five players’ names taken by the referee before the final whistle as tempers flared and frustration on both sides threatened to spill over.

With old scores to settle, we expect Spurs latest skirmish with Everton to be similarly competitive, and a high number of cards should follow.

10 or more corners

11 corners were won by both teams combined when Spurs eked out a narrow 1-0 win against Everton in July, and the evidence suggests we should expect double figure corners when the teams renew acquaintances this weekend.

In 2019/20, Tottenham’s Premier League fixtures saw an average of 10.71 corners awarded per 90 minutes, while Everton’s equivalent figures for the same set-piece also crept past the 10 mark on average per for the campaign (10.1).

James Rodriguez 2 or more shots

Everton convinced Colombian superstar James Rodriguez to swap Madrid for Merseyside this summer in what was a massive coup for the club, and the high-profile schemer is in line to make his Toffees debut this weekend.

With an ability to strike off both feet, Rodriguez carries a significant goal-threat to go along with his creative abilities, and the 29-year-old will be keen to showcase his skills to his new supporters and employers against Spurs.

Rodriguez, a renowned dead-ball expert, is also likely to be given responsibility for Everton’s free-kicks around Spurs’ penalty area on Sunday, and we think the ex-Bayern Munich star should fire his way past two attempts over the 90 minutes with relative comfort.
