The final British Classic of the season takes place at Doncaster on Saturday 12th September and the St Leger remains the ultimate test of stamina for the three-year-old class.
The St Leger Stakes is the world’s oldest classic horse race. Run over a tough and demanding one-mile-six-and-a-half-furlong trip, the St Leger will force its participants to dig deep into their reserves to taste Classic glory, going a full quarter of a mile further than in The Derby at Epsom.
Alongside the main event, the Festival’s showpiece day also features top-class races including the Group 2 Champagne Stakes, the Group 2 Park Stakes and the fast and furious, ultra-competitive sprint – the Portland Handicap.
The St Leger is of course the third and final leg of the Classic ‘Triple Crown’ in Britain’s calendar – following on from the 2,000 Guineas and The Derby or (for the fillies’) the 1,000 Guineas and The Oaks.
The Triple Crown hasn’t been completed since Nijinsky in 1970, with 2012 St Leger runner-up Camelot coming closest, only to be denied by outside Encke at Doncaster.
