The Premier League have released their official fixture list for the new 2020/21 campaign this morning.
Supporters everywhere are busy scanning through the freshly inked schedule, plotting the journey their team will take through the new season and picking out the easiest and trickiest looking sequences of games, along with local derby and rival team clashes.
Of course, the calendar has yet to be picked apart and rearranged by the TV broadcasters, however, we still have a decent, general idea about who will play who and when.
In 2020/21, first-time champions Liverpool will be aiming to defend their crown, while the race to secure a top four finish a little further down promises to be just as engaging, with Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal, Leicester, Tottenham and Wolves all targeting reinforcements before the action starts.
In Leeds, West Brom and Fulham, the Premier League has three new combatants to keep things fresh, and with such a small gap between the previous and new campaigns, the mid-season exhale is much shorter than usual.
Let’s take a closer look the 2020/21 fixture list and how the scheduling could affect the race for places at both ends of the table next season.
Remember – we’ll be covering every fixture in detail with betting tips and match previews on our Premier League predictions page.
Premier League opening fixtures
Saturday, 12 September 2020
Crystal Palace vs Southampton
Fulham vs Arsenal
Liverpool vs Leeds
Tottenham vs Everton
West Brom vs Leicester City
West Ham vs Newcastle
Monday, 14 September 2020
Brighton v Chelsea
Sheff Utd v Wolves
*Burnley vs Man Utd and Man City vs Aston Villa have been postponed due to the Manchester clubs’ European involvement.
Premier League champions Liverpool begin their title defence against Leeds United at Anfield on September 12th – where the Reds will kick off against promoted opposition at home for the second year running.
Elsewhere, Tottenham’s clash with Everton pitting former Champions League winning managers Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti against each other is the weekend’s other standout fixture.
Sheffield United’s meeting with Wolves also promises to be a captivating watch between two teams who flirted with Champions League qualification last term.
Premier League last day fixtures: potential for drama on the final day?
Premier League 20/21 Final Day Fixtures
Sunday, 23 May 2021
Arsenal vs Brighton
Aston Villa vs Chelsea
Fulham vs Newcastle
Leeds vs West Brom
Leicester vs Tottenham
Liverpool vs Crystal Palace
Man City vs Everton
Sheffield United vs Burnley
West Ham vs Southampton
Wolves vs Manchester United
The 2019/20 title race was decided miles before the finish line last season, however, if things run a little closer this time around, both favourites – Liverpool and Man City – close out their campaigns with winnable looking home ties against Crystal Palace and Everton respectively.
Elsewhere, two of the division’s new boys Leeds and West Brom will hope to have extinguished any lingering relegation fears before they face off at Elland Road on the final day, while Wolves last fixture against Man Utd has the look of a potential top four decider.
Premier League derby dates
17 October – Everton v Liverpool
5 December – Tottenham Hotspur v Arsenal
12 December – Manchester United v Manchester City
16 January – Wolves vs West Brom
20 February – Liverpool v Everton
6 March – Manchester City v Manchester United
13 March – Arsenal v Tottenham Hotspur
01 May – West Brom vs Wolves
Supporters won’t have to wait long to watch the first big derby game of the new season. The first of two Merseyside derbies between Everton and Liverpool pencilled in for October 17th, with the return fixture at Anfield on February 20th.
Elsewhere, Arsenal and Spurs renew their rivalry on December 5th at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and the North London antagonists meet again on Arsenal’s patch on March 13th.
The first Manchester derby of the new campaign between United and City takes place on December 12th, before they lock horns again in early March. United famously beat City home and away last season, bagging the bragging rights and six points against their neighbours.
West Brom’s promotion means supporters also have the Black Country derby to look forward to this term, and the regional rivals will go head-to-head at Molineux on January 16, before the return fixture at the Hawthorns on May 1st.
Favourable Run in for Liverpool?
Liverpool’s bid to retain their Premier League title could be aided by what looks an extremely favourable run in on paper.
Jurgen Klopp’s all-conquering Reds close out the 2020/21 season with an eight-game surge against Aston Villa (H), Leeds (A), Newcastle (H), Man Utd (A), Southampton (H), West Brom (A), Burnley (A) and Crystal Palace (H) – a sequence that looks like potentially points laden streak.
If the Merseysiders fulfil expectations and are in the title mix again ahead of the campaign’s climax, then the landscape for a strong final flourish looks favourable.
Manchester United’s Champions League conundrum
Manchester United’s remarkable turnaround and eventual third place finish last season allowed them to return to the Champions League under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, however, if the Red Devils are to enjoy success on multiple fronts next term, it looks as though they will have to do it the hard way.
United’s extremely tough post-Champions League group stage fixtures reads as follows : Chelsea (H), Arsenal (H), Everton (A), Southampton (A), West Ham (A), Manchester City (H).
With United’s squad already looking thin and short on depth, Solskjaer could find juggling multiple responsibilities a tough task.
