Reports emerging from the meeting between Premier League clubs suggests that all clubs have agreed in principle to restart the season on June 17th.
The plan is yet to be finalised, but Aston Villa vs Sheffield United and Manchester City vs Arsenal will be the first two fixtures on Wednesday, June 17th and these games will be swiftly followed by a full fixture list starting on June 19th.
This comes after the 20 Premier League clubs voted unanimously to resume full contact training on Wednesday and, with early signs suggesting the Bundesliga restart has been successful, the path is paved for a quick return to top flight action as they strive to complete the 92 remaining fixtures.
Project Restart plans moving quickly
Two weeks ago the UK government opened the door for the return of the Premier League in June, and the brains behind Project Restart certainly haven’t wasted any time getting plans in place.
No contact training resumed last Tuesday and, after the vote yesterday, that will progress to contact training as the players look to regain the fitness lost during the 100-day break from action.
Not only that, but plans to televise almost all of the remaining top flight fixtures are also in motion, with suggestions such as staggered kickoff times and free-to-air fixtures all being taken into consideration. Of course, there is still the significant hurdle of Sky and BT broadcasting rights to overcome.
Player and staff safety is rightfully being taken very seriously, too. All players and staff are currently being tested twice per week and any who test positive must self-isolate for a period of seven days. So far, of the 2,752 tests conducted, 12 people have tested positive, including Bournemouth goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.
