After a spectacular start to the season Ange Postecoglou is learning about the harsh realities of the Premier League.
Ten games in and Spurs were unbeaten, won eight, drawn two, now questions are being asked after picking up just one point in 15 and drifting out of the top four.
Injuries and suspensions have hit hard and captain, Son’s fitness is a concern after being forced off in the 2-1 defeat to West Ham.
It’s the same story for Eddie Howe who could be without a dozen players for Newcastle’s trip to north London this afternoon, England ‘keeper Nick Pope being among the most notable absentees.
The bookies make Tottenham 11/10 faves to get back to winning ways with Newcastle at 11/5, perhaps a reflection on their poor away form which has seen them win just once on seven road trips so far.
This fixture boasts the highest goals per game rate (3.16 per game) of any which have been played at least 50 time in the Premier League and on current form we should see goals today. The last seven meetings have averaged 4.43.
Over 2.5 goals pays a paltry 8/15. It could be worth pushing your luck for Over 3.5 at 11/8 or two or more goals in the first half at 5/4.
In midweek we highlighted Tottenham’s trend of starting matches fast and scoring early. They’ve now netted in the 11th, 6th, 22nd, 3rd and 6th minute of their last five games which bodes well for a couple of strikes in the first 45.
Everton turned in their best performance of the season in their midweek 3-0 win over Newcastle and without their 10-point penalty would be above today’s opponents Chelsea in the table.
Therefore it makes no sense to see them at 2/1 to win this afternoon’s clash at Goodison Park. It’s not as if the Blues have a good record at Everton, their 1-0 there last season ended a run of four victories for the Toffees.
Sean Dyche’s men are definitely the value bet on Merseyside today.
In the Scottish Premiership Celtic will be out to avenge a 1-0 defeat to Kilmarnock which knocked them out of the League Cup earlier in the season.
The Hoops haven’t hit the standards that Brendan Rodgers expects recently despite picking up wins but they have been consistent in hitting corners.
Their last six domestic matches have seen them hit 11, 12, 13, 11, 13, and 12 so the 4/1 on Over 9 and 7/1 on Over 10 should be of interest today, especially with Rodgers likely to play any pairing from Palma, Yang, Johnston, Forrest or Tilio on the flanks.
Best bet though could be Over 3 first half corners which is generously price at 13/10.
