Super Sunday has two intriguing matches lined up this afternoon and there’s a nice little appetiser from Scotland at lunchtime too.
Aberdeen v Rangers is never short of drama and debate has raged in Scotland this week as to whether the Dons raise their game for this fixture over all others.
They’ve won two of the last three clashes between the sides and the Gers have fewer than 50% of the last 24 meetings which all makes for a fascinating high noon showdown at Pittodrie.
Throw in to the mix that the Dons need a reaction after a 6-0 drubbing at Celtic Park last time out and that Rangers, unbeaten under Phillipe Clement, can eat further in to the Hoops’ lead at the top following their 1-1 draw with Motherwell yesterday.
The bookies only see it going one way with the visitors priced at 1/2 to win and the Dons at 11/2. Aberdeen’s win at Ibrox was in the last throes of the Michael Beale era but Rangers are looking a different beast under Clement and are unlikely to pass up the opportunity to cut Celtic’s lead.
Cards could be a better angle. This fixture has seen 16 reds dished out in the last 30 editions and its 11/4 for someone to take an early bath today.
On the cards market the line is set at 4.5, so 4/6 for five or more.
Todd Cantwell has picked up 14 yellow cards in his last 30 appearances and is making a habit of finding his way in to the referee’s notebook. Most likely to be booked for the Dons is Slobodan Rubezic who has been booked 10 times in 22 appearances so far this season, including a yellow in each of Montenegro’s two matches last week.
The booking BetBuilder pays 9/2.
Our first offering in the Premier League sees Tottenham (29/20) and Aston Villa (8/5) vie for a place in the top four.
Spurs already occupy fourth spot but a win for Villa would see them draw level on points with Liverpool in third.
Unai Emery’s side have earned lots of plaudits this year but have come up short against teams in the top six so far this campaign. They were on the end of a 5-1 hammering on the opening day at Newcastle and were comprehensively beaten 3-0 at Anfield.
Spurs will still be reeling from defeats to Chelsea and Wolves which derailed their excellent start to the season and Ange Postecoglou still has a long list of absentees to contend with including the influential James Maddison, Micky van de Ven, Richarlison and the suspended Cristian Romero and Yves Bissouma.
That Villa away record is a concern, but so is Spurs’ weakened squad so best avoiding calling the winners here.
Ange Postecoglou’s gung-ho attitude means things are rarely dull in North London however so we should probably expect an entertaining affair, but the bookies are taking no chances with Over 2.5 at 19/40 and Over 3.5 at 6/5.
The latter shouldn’t be too far away and if pressed looks the best value option.
Emotions could be running high at Goodison Park following Everton’s 10 point deduction earlier in the week and if that energy is harness in a positive way it could power Everton to victory over Manchester United this afternoon.
It’s not a fixture the Toffees tend to fare well in – they’ve only won two of the previous 19 meetings – but they may feel they have a point to prove on the pitch and with United in a continually fragile state it could be a memorable afternoon for the Blue half of Merseyside at 17/10.
