With eight matches to play Burnley are only a matter of games away from securing a quick-fire return to the Premier League.
Vincent Kompany’s men hold a commanding 13 point lead at the top of the table and enjoy a 16 point gap to Middlesbrough in third. The Clarets can take another huge step towards promotion with a win tonight against Sunderland.
Man City’s 6-0 FA Cup win may have brought a dose of reality to Turf Moor but their big prize this season was always going to be a place at the top table once again. Few could have predicted the style with which they’ve ripped up the Championship under Kompany. To have lost just two games all season in the ultra-competitive second tier is some going and to put things in to perspective they’re on track for 103 points, a tally only bettered by Reading back in the 2005-06 season.
Kompany will be keen to get the job done as quickly as possible and the three points should be staying in Lancashire this evening.
Visitors Sunderland have threatened to get in the play-off mix at various points of the season but form his dipped at just the wrong stage of the season. Just one win in seven has seen them slip to 11th in the table and all but end their promotion hopes.
The league leaders look a solid enough bet at 9/20 to win. They’ve won almost half of their home games to nil (9 of 19) and are a tempting 11/8 to do so tonight.
Tonight’s match in the Scottish Championship is crucial at both ends of the table.
The door has been left open for Ayr United at the top of the table with Queen’s Park and Dundee’s inability to open up a meaningful gap. A win tonight would take them just two points off the summit.
Opponents Arbroath have taken advantage of Cove Rangers’ collapse and climbed to 8th in the table. They’ve been ekeing out draws in recent weeks and pulled off a brilliant 1-0 win over league leaders Queen’s Park last weekend to make it five without defeat.
But the match pits the league’s worst home record against the league’s best away record, if that trends anything to go by then the 11/8 on Ayr Utd to win is worth taking on.
Over in Ireland things are starting to take shape in the Premier Division. Champions Shamrock Rovers have yet to get going and are winless in six, drawing five of those. They always find the going tough at Dundalk’s Oriel Park where they’ve won just three of the 19 league encounters (W3 D7 L9).
Dundalk have made a decent start to the season and sit third, their only defeat coming in Dublin to early league leaders Bohs. 13/5 on the home win feels generous as does the 4/5 in the Double Chance market.
