There’s never such a thing as a meaningless Merseyside Derby and even although the clubs might be sitting in 10th and 18th place in the Premier League table there’s plenty at stake in tonight’s mouth-watering clash at Anfield.
In the red corner, Jurgen Klopp and a team that look a shadow of themselves under the German, desperate for a morale-boosting derby victory. In the blue corner, newly appointed Sean Dyche, desperate to make it two wins from two and prove he’s capable of keeping Everton in the top flight.
Liverpool are 13/20 to take the honours this evening but that feels short given the form they’re in. The Reds have won just one of their last seven, that a cup replay against Wolves with a much-changed starting XI.
Goalscoring has been a bit of a problem for Liverpool of late, just two goals in their last five games just isn’t good enough. They had 22 attempts at goals last Saturday at Wolves but failed to register a goal, which suggests they’re lacking a cutting edge in front of goal.
As for Everton, was their new-manager-bounce just that? Or will we see another winning performance under Dyche? Despite a poor run of form they’ve found the net in six of their last seven since the World Cup break.
The 17/4 on the Toffees will be popular among the optimistic Bluenoses but Everton have won just one of 22 away league games at Anfield, a 2-0 win in February 2021 so it’s hard to make a case for a win for the visitors tonight.
No-goal before 27:00 looks a solid bet based on the mis-friring Reds and in a game where both might take a cautious approach early on. A blank first half pays 9/4.
In Scotland it’s the return of Darvel to our screens on BBC Scotland. For the unitiated, the sixth-tier side pulled off one of the biggest shocks in Scottish Cup history with a 1-0 win over Aberdeen in the last round. Truth be told, it wasn’t that big a surprise despite up to 50/1 odds. Aberdeen were in a desperate state and Darvel are one of the up-and-coming, well-funded teams in the lower reaches of the Scottish game and plenty of punters here on the site cashed in that night.
There’ll be no 50s or anywhere near it available tonight when Falkirk visit Recreation Park. Instead the Ayrshire side are just 3/1 against their League One opponents, who can be backed at 8/15.
Those odds are just too short to get involved in another surprise result, to be fair, it’s not really an upset at 3/1.
