This time last year Liverpool opened up for their home match against Manchester City at 17/10, today they’re almost as big as 3/1 in what is a do or die match for the Reds.
That’s a reflection on the gulf between the two sides so far this season which has seen a 13-point gap open up between last year’s champions and runners-up. While City have mostly been blowing the opposition away, Liverpool having been mostly blowing hot and cold.
Jurgen Klopp’s men thumped Rangers 7-1 on Thursday and looked back to their best at times in a relentless second half display but there’s a huge step-up in quality of opposition this afternoon.
City’s 0-0 draw in Copenhagen, without Erling Haaland, proved how important it will be for Liverpool to keep the Norwegian quiet, but few have managed it so far this season. The striker is 8/11 to find the net, probably as big a price as we’ll get all season, as is the 12/1 on another hat-trick.
Goals have rarely been in short supply when these sides meet, each of the last six clashes have seen both teams score and four or more have been scored in the last five contests. It’s just 4/6 for Over 2.5 Goals and BTTS. Over 3.5 Goals on it’s own is 11/10.
It’s hard to see past City given the form of both sides at the moment so back them to win and score two or more at even money.
At Old Trafford Man Utd and Newcastle meet with both sides chasing a top four spot. For all United’s problem so far this season, their form has been pretty good, winning eight of their last 10 but the Magpies can cause them problems today.
Eddie Howe’s side went toe-to-toe with Manchester City, drawing 3-3 in a six-goal thriller, and it took a 98th minute winner by Carvalho for Liverpool to win all three points against them at Anfield.
Although united have been pikcing up wins it’s been steady rather than spectacular and they look a bit short at 19/20. Better to be on the visitors at 11/4 to win or 4/5 in the Double Chance market.
In Scotland Giovanni van Bronckhorst will need to pick his Rangers squad up off the floor after that mauling by Liverpool. Injury to Connor Goldson leaves the Gers short at the back and Motherwell could take advantage. They don’t have a great record in this fixture but they have taken a point in three of the last five meetings.
Well have also scored in each of the last seven clashes between the sides and are a terrific 8/11 to net today (compare that to the 8/11 on Erling Haaland to score). Working against Steven Hamell’s side is the fact they’ve got the worst home record in the Premiership with just four points from four games and a measly two goals scoredm but BTTS looks attractive at 19/20.
At Pittodrie, Hearts too must recover quickly from a European leathering but they’ve failed to win their last five away to Aberdeen. The Dons have been as good at home, as they have been bad away, and they need a pick-me-up after going down 4-0 in midweek at Dundee United.
The Jambos European adventures were always going to stretch their squad and that could catch up with them today. Aberdeen at 5/4 will be popular but it might be better to back them to score two or more at evens. Jim Goodwin’s men have hit more goals per game at home (15) than both Celtic and Rangers so far.
Finally, in Spain there’s the small matter of an El Clasico at 3.15. Mark Walker, who scored a treble of winners in Scotland yesterday, casts his eye over another crucial clash between Real Madrid and Barcelona.
