It’s been a long summer. No major championship means we’ve had to wait longer than normal for football’s return and while the league seasons don’t kick-off for another few weeks yet we’re under way in Scotland today with the Premier Sports Cup.
The competition features all the teams in the SPFL with the exception of those who have qualified for Europe (they’ll join for the knock-out stages) plus a few teams from lower down the pyramid.
The Lee Johnson era gets underway at Easter Road and his new side should have a comfortable afternoon against part-timers Clyde. Johnson has overseen a huge turnover in the squad and fans will be keen to see experienced internationalists David Marshall and Aiden McGeady as well as the potential emergance of Elias Melkersen as star striker after some promising performances for the Hibees.
Hibs to win both halves at even money could be a good option considering they’re 1/7 to win.
There should be a fascinating match in Paisley where St Mirren host Arbroath. Dick Campbell’s side narrowly missed out on promotion to the top flight so it’ll be interesting to see how they bounce back this season after that disappointment. The Red Lichties could catch the Buddies off-guard and they’re 11/10 in the Draw No Bet market.
Similarly, Inverness could find it tough at Kelty Hearts. John Potter has replaced Kevin Thomson as the man in charge of Kelty who ganied promotion at the first time of asking from League Two last season. They’ve added even more quality and experience to their squad for the challenges ahead and are arguably of Championship standard. We’ll find out more this afternoon and look worth a punt at 21/10.
